As a long-time fan of Hulkamania and Chris Hemsworth‘s work, I must admit that the news about the cancellation of the Hulk Hogan biopic left me feeling like a kid who just found out Santa Claus isn’t real. The prospect of seeing Hemsworth embody the larger-than-life persona of Hulk Hogan was an exciting one, and I shared the wrestler’s enthusiasm for the project.
It’s accurate to state that the Chris Hemsworth-starring Hulk Hogan biopic was the most eagerly awaited wrestling film in quite some time. However, we discovered in August that the project had ceased to exist. Now, thanks to Hogan himself, we have a bit more understanding of what led to this, as he recently clarified on a podcast why he chose to withdraw from the movie despite thinking it would be an Oscar contender.
A significant number of people were eager to see Hemsworth portray Hulk Hogan in a film, and it was confirmed that Hulkster himself was equally enthusiastic about the project. He recently discussed on the PBD Podcast his reasons for backing out when Netflix delayed payments, as well as sharing what he admired about the script’s content.
Initially, I exclaimed, ‘Wow, this is fantastic!’ As we conversed, I shared both the pros and cons of wrestling with him. Over a period of three years, our collaboration was like a ping-pong match. Upon reading it, I felt it was extremely dark, possibly the right term, which might appeal to the public. Reading further, I exclaimed, ‘Wow, if this project gets released…’ There were rumors that Chris Hemsworth had never portrayed a real person before and could potentially win an Oscar for his performance, as well as the film itself. As the wrestler explained, this left the door open for a sequel, in case the movie was as big of a hit as he thought it’d be.
Although the Chris Hemsworth biopic has been cancelled, we’re looking forward to Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s upcoming film titled “Killing Gawker“. Contrary to Hulk Hogan’s wrestling career, this movie will zero in on the court case that brought his racially charged comments to light, which led to a brief suspension from the WWE. It was earlier mentioned that Hogan holds no interest in the film and has no affiliation with it whatsoever. In a recent podcast, Hogan expressed that he’s not involved but hinted that if the movie were ever made, it might encounter the same legal troubles as Gawker did.
The WWE icon didn’t dismiss the possibility of watching the scrapped film. He hinted at a potential documentary or a four-episode TV show from the original script, but emphasized the importance of a “checks and balances” system. This suggests that Hulk Hogan might have had issues with certain aspects of the script which he couldn’t change, potentially contributing to his decision to step away from the movie. It’s also plausible that he was simply jealous of Chris Hemsworth’s muscular portrayal in the role. For now, it appears there’s no Hulk Hogan biopic being produced, but circumstances could shift in the future.
