The Last Day Filming Blue Bloods With Tom Selleck On Set Sounds Intense, But Donnie Wahlberg Is Trying To Keep His Chin Up: ‘Gratitude, Not Saditude’

As a devoted fan of Blue Bloods for over a decade, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions as we approach the final episodes. The Reagan family has been a constant companion in my life, and their journey has touched my heart in ways words cannot express.

Blue Bloods is one of many shows ending this year, and the final episodes are officially airing on the 2024 TV schedule. With only a handful of them left to say goodbye to the Reagan family, it’s going to be incredibly emotional for viewers. It was emotional for the cast too, as it sounds like filming with Tom Selleck was intense for the final day. However, Donnie Wahlberg kept a positive attitude about it all.

Selleck has expressed his desire for “Blue Bloods” not to conclude, and fans are initiating petitions in anticipation that Frank Reagan’s wishes might be granted. Rumors suggest that additional seasons, spinoffs, or a movie of “Blue Bloods” could materialize, but as of now, no definitive plans have been announced. As filming concluded, it marked the end (for now), at least temporarily.

Wahlberg reminisced about the last day on set with Andy Cohen on Sirius XM’s Radio Andy, expressing a desire to cherish those memories, despite the painful emotions of parting: a bittersweet farewell.

It felt, it was, I think I’d use the term, I felt tremendous gratitude, not saditude, but everyone cried. Everyone was crying, of course. The last day was heartbreaking.

Spanning 14 seasons and over 250 episodes is an impressive accomplishment, especially when it’s not choosing to conclude on its own. Therefore, tears were inevitable, and more are likely when the finale airs in December. Yet, Wahlberg’s gratitude and desire to stay positive are helping to dampen the sadness. He continued to reminisce about his final days on set and Tom Selleck dropping by to watch him perform, expressing his sentiments as:

Absolutely, it was a whirlwind of feelings. Isn’t that right? The fourteen years seemed to fly by in an instant at times, but they also encompassed a significant portion of my life. You understand, I didn’t know my wife when the series began. She visited me on set during season three, and people were curious about her presence. The crew was excited because we formed strong bonds over time. On the final day, I was shooting all my scenes in the squad room, and it felt like I was ruling as Danny Reagan. Tom Selleck even dropped by just to watch. It’s amazing how much history we shared over those fourteen years.

Working alongside Tom Selleck might seem slightly daunting, but it’s equally appealing. Moreover, given that Wahlberg collaborated with him for more than a decade, it must have been emotionally significant for many reasons to have him on set during his last scenes.

Discussing the final scenes, Tom Selleck shared that his initial and concluding takes in Blue Bloods involved the Reagan family dinner scenes. Although it’s uncertain what the ultimate scene of the CBS series will depict as shows are often filmed out of sequence, a family dinner seems fitting as an ending. Here’s to hoping that our farewell with this family is shared during a meal, much like Selleck and Wahlberg experienced in their scenes.

In just under two months, it’s going to be tough to bid farewell to “Blue Bloods”. Fans should probably have their tissues handy, as the emotional goodbyes from the cast before the series finale are sure to pull at heartstrings. Fortunately, all episodes can be streamed with a Paramount+ subscription, allowing fans to keep the Reagans close even after they air their last episode on CBS at 10 p.m. ET on a Friday.
