As someone who has been living under a rock for the past 13 years (or rather, in a coma), I can only imagine the sheer overwhelming delight and confusion my aunt must be feeling now that she’s re-entering society. Netflix, being the innovative and humorous company they are, greeted her with the perfect response – letting her keep the DVDs! It’s a small gesture but it brings a smile to my face, knowing that even in such a high-tech world, there’s still room for a little nostalgia.
Netflix has made significant strides since it initially began as a DVD rental service in 2007. Now, with just a single click, you can access an array of popular movies and TV shows streaming this year. However, if someone hasn’t been around for the past decade or so, they might be amazed! One individual shared on social media that his aunt, who had been in a coma for 13 years, has miraculously awakened. Netflix provided a fantastic response to this unexpected news.
Over the last ten years, Netflix has significantly advanced to become one of the top-notch streaming platforms. Transforming from a DVD rental service to producing critically acclaimed films and series demonstrates the remarkable progress made in streaming. Unfortunately, it seems that one woman has been oblivious to much of what’s transpired globally over the past 13 years. Previously podcast host Bruke Fasil recently disclosed on X that his aunt emerged from a coma after such a lengthy period. In response to the positive news, Netflix offered an exceptional reaction:

I love that! Netflix is clearly referring to how their DVD service shut down in September of last year. Compared to this poor lady having to worry about rental fees for not returning her supposed DVDs on time, Netflix is humorously cutting her a break. Even so, the streaming service had a neat surprise for those still using the DVD service: those who got DVDs after August 29th didn’t need to return them. If Fasil’s aunt had a ton of Netflix DVDs she didn’t get a chance to return, at least now she can watch them with no worries of having to turn them in. After all, John Stamos revealed he had three rentals he didn’t plan to return.
Generally speaking, it seems plausible that Netflix might create an original tale revolving around a woman who emerges from a 13-year coma. Yet, in essence, we’ve already seen this story unfold through the film Senior Year, starring Rebel Wilson. In the recently popular Netflix movie of 2022, titled “The Adam Project,” we follow Stephanie, a high school cheerleader who awakens from a coma to find herself as a 37-year-old woman. This is quite a mind-bending experience! Stephanie must adapt to the latest technology and familiarize herself with contemporary societal norms that she didn’t encounter during her high school years. I am intrigued to discover what particular challenges Bruke Fasil’s aunt may have faced when returning to reality after being away for over a decade.
13 years ago, in 2011, Netflix didn’t have its first original movie, “Beasts of No Nation,” until 2015. Prior to that, it streamed past theatrical releases like “Inception,” “The Social Network,” and “Black Swan.” The streaming service didn’t offer any original shows until 2012 with “Lilyhammer” and “House of Cards” a year later. It’s amazing to think that someone who fell into a coma 13 years ago would have missed out on Netflix’s most popular original movies and addictive series. Luckily, the beauty of streaming services is their vast selection. The challenge is to watch as much as possible before your favorite content gets removed from Netflix.
