As someone who has spent years following the tumultuous world of Bollywood, I must admit that the latest developments in the Salman Khan saga are nothing short of mind-boggling. The Bishnoi community‘s protest against Salman and his father, Salim, over the blackbuck poaching case from 1998 is a stark reminder of how one incident can cast a long shadow, even decades later.
On October 27, 2024, residents of the Bishnoi community in Jaipur organized a protest, setting alight effigies of actor Salman Khan and his father, screenwriter Salim Khan. This action was sparked by public anger over comments made by Salim Khan that were perceived as misleading about the 1998 blackbuck poaching case.
The Bishnoi community highly reveres the blackbuck, and their leaders underline the need for responsibility from those involved, stressing that they do not accuse or blame lightly.
As reported by Hindustan Times, adherents of the Bishnoi community gathered in Jaipur on October 27 in a demonstration targeting a particular father-son pair. They articulated that, as members of the Bishnoi faith, they avoid making unjustified accusations against anyone.
26 years ago, when the lawsuit was initially brought forth, a number of notable individuals, among them the then-MLA representing the Bishnoi community, were in attendance.
The collective declared, “Salim Khan must not deceive the public with untruthful statements. The entire community has been deeply affected by Salim Khan’s statement. We are committed to exerting every possible effort to ensure justice prevails in the Blackbuck case. Furthermore, we plan to demonstrate our disapproval by taking our protest to the streets.
According to a recent interview with ABP, Salim Khan firmly believes that Salman is not guilty of any wrongdoing towards animals.
1998 saw a poaching incident in Rajasthan that sparked a major uproar. Though Salman was cleared of charges, the Bishnoi community persists in seeking an apology from him.
The protest is in response to repeated death threats made by gangster Lawrence Bishnoi towards Salman and Salim. Lawrence has explained that his hostility towards Salman originates from the blackbuck poaching case, demanding that Salman visit a temple belonging to the Bishnoi community in Rajasthan for forgiveness, while warning of serious consequences if he doesn’t comply. This year, gunmen connected to Lawrence have opened fire near Salman’s home.
To counter these dangers, the Mumbai Police have increased security precautions for Salman. The authorities suggest that the recent assassination of MLA Baba Siddique, who was a friend of Salman’s, might be related to the ongoing feud between Lawrence Bishnoi and Salman Khan.
