Venom: The Last Dance Has A Blink-And-You'll-Miss-It Ghostbusters Easter Egg (I Totally Did)

As a lifelong fan of both Venom and Ghostbusters, I can confidently say that the Easter egg hidden in Venom: The Last Dance has left me feeling like a complete and utter marshmallow man! I’ve watched this movie more times than I care to count, yet it took a shrewd-eyed film critic to point out the tiny sticker on a mailbox outside Area 51 that subtly connects these two iconic franchises.

Minor spoilers for Venom: The Last Dance lie ahead, so read at your own discretion.

The time has arrived for Eddie Brock and his mischievous alien symbiote to embark on their final adventure in “Venom: The Last Dance”. With the chaos and hilarity expected to fill the cinema screens when this film hits theaters in 2024, many fans are eagerly anticipating Easter eggs and other hidden details. Interestingly enough, there’s a fleeting reference to the “Ghostbusters” franchise that you might miss if you blink! (It’s worth noting that I, too, didn’t spot it during my viewing.)

As a gamer, I’m sure you recall the thrilling scenes from “The Last Dance” where the infamous Area 51 is woven into the narrative. In the movie, this top-secret military base located in Nevada is about to be shut down soon. Contrary to popular belief, it’s Area 55 that will stay operational for more extraterrestrial research and experimentation. You might think the connection to the famous ghost-hunting crew lies within the confines of this new facility, but that’s not where the truth resides.

SlashFilm cleverly noted that a hidden reference in question is linked to a mailbox situated outside of Area 51. Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice various stickers on it, one of which promotes Ray’s Occult Books – a bookstore well-known from the Ghostbusters series, owned by Dan Aykroyd’s character, Ray Stantz. (For those unfamiliar with the Ghostbusters backstory)

Venom: The Last Dance Has A Blink-And-You'll-Miss-It Ghostbusters Easter Egg (I Totally Did)

In my opinion, when watching “The Last Dance,” I wasn’t specifically seeking out connections to Sony’s comedic supernatural series, as I was preoccupied with Spider-Man hints instead. However, being a fan of the ghostly franchise, I can’t help but feel let down that I missed the subtle reference if there was one. The sticker in the movie is a delightful touch, and it leaves me wondering who thought to include it in the production. Either way, credit goes to the creative mind behind that decision.

Venom: The Last Dance Review: Good Riddance

What this shrewdly placed Easter egg helps signify is the continued influence of the Ghostbusters movies and TV shows. Since the franchise’s first entry (which is one of the best ‘80s films) was released in 1984, moviegoers have been captivated by the humorously creepy exploits of Ray Stantz, Peter Venkman, Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore and those in their orbit. The IP is still going strong as well, with the latest installment – Frozen Empire – having opened earlier this year. A new GB animated series is even in the works at Netflix now. All in all, the future still seems bright for this tried-and-true property.

Currently, there’s a lot of speculation about what the future holds for Venom and Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. As confirmed by Kelly Marcel, The Last Dance serves as the conclusion to Eddie Brock’s story but also lays the groundwork for future developments within the SSMU. This is especially true when it comes to introducing Knull, a powerful villain capable of conquering entire planets. Moreover, Tom Hardy has expressed his desire to see his character, Venom, battle Spider-Man; however, whether this encounter will occur or not is yet to be determined.

It’s currently hard to believe that the worlds of Venom and Ghostbusters will ever intersect, but the clever tie-in hinted at by that mailbox sticker has certainly piqued my interest. I find myself constantly revisiting this Easter egg (and feeling a bit foolish for not noticing it sooner) and now I’m considering going back to the theater again.

Feel free to watch “Venom: The Last Dance” in theaters across the country, since it’s currently showing there. Additionally, keep an eye out for news about future superhero films.
