The 2018 miniseries Escape at Dannemora is a portrayal of actual events. It tells the true story of the daring escape by two inmates from the Clinton Correctional Facility in New York, which took place in 2015. The infamous prisoners were Richard Matt and David Sweat. Matt was serving time for the kidnapping and murder of his elderly boss, while Sweat had stolen a truck and numerous guns from a gun store. They attacked a sheriff’s deputy during their escape, leaving him seriously wounded. After pleading guilty to avoid the death penalty, Sweat was sentenced to life without parole, making any hope of future release slim for both men.

On June 6, 2015, Richard Matt and David Sweat faced one of their toughest days during their prison term, as they utilized various tools to dig a tunnel and make an escape. Being in a part of the prison that afforded them more freedom, these two convicts played a crucial part in acquiring the tools necessary for their daring breakout. It’s no wonder that their plan echoed many successful prison escape narratives, as it involved collusion with prison staff assisting inmates to flee.

In the course of their scheme, the duo developed an alliance with Tilly, who ran the prison tailor shop. Due to personal struggles, she found herself attracted to both of them, according to the miniseries. However, in reality, Tilly claims that her relationship with Matt was coerced. It’s portrayed in the series that she willingly sought closeness with him.

Despite being imprisoned in a top-security facility, with a more relaxed arrangement within the section housing their cells and assistance from an inside source, Richard and David surprisingly contrived an escape, triggering a nationwide manhunt. Originally intended for Mexico, their getaway driver, Tilly, had second thoughts, leading them to Canada instead.

One indisputable fact is that the three individuals involved in the prison break are no better off than they were prior to their escape. Sweat and Matt attempted to make a run for Canada, but Matt’s blistered feet hindered them, forcing him to leave Sweat behind. Despite being at large for several weeks, Sweat managed to travel only a short distance before he was spotted on a road in New York and shot. Miraculously, he survived the attack, but his freedom was short-lived as he was returned to prison, facing additional years for his actions during the escape and for possessing contraband.

After being abandoned by his accomplice and on the run for a full 20 days, a civilian helped the police locate Matt’s hideout, a cabin in Malone. Rather than spending a lifetime behind bars, this dangerous murderer opted for a brief period of uncertain liberty.

For Mitchell, the penalties weren’t as severe compared to what Matt and Sweat experienced. Interestingly, her sentence in prison was eight years, but she was released after serving four years in 2020. Throughout her imprisonment, Tilly’s husband visited her every other weekend, despite the questionable relationship she maintained with the two convicts.
