Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin Show Support for Kamala Harris After Comedian Insults Puerto Rico at Trump Rally

As a proud Puerto Rican with roots deeply entrenched in the island, I find the recent remarks by Tony Hinchcliffe at Donald Trump’s rally to be not only distasteful but also offensive and disrespectful. It is disheartening to see such blatant disregard for my people and our home, Puerto Rico.

On Sunday evening, Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez, and Ricky Martin joined others in expressing their support for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, following a comedian’s racially insensitive joke about Puerto Rico at a rally held by President Donald Trump.

During a gathering at New York’s Madison Square Garden, the comedian Tony Hinchcliffe delivered offensive and discriminatory jokes targeting Latinos, Jews, and African Americans – groups crucial to the upcoming election, only nine days from now.

It seems you might not be aware, but currently, there’s an island made up of trash drifting in the sea. This floating mass is often referred to as such, I believe.” This was stated during the rally by Hinchcliffe.

Hinchcliffe’s joke drew swift criticism from Harris’ campaign, as they are vying for support among Puerto Rican communities in Pennsylvania and other key states, similar to Trump’s efforts.

Bad Bunny, a Puerto Rican artist with over 45.6 million Instagram followers, reacted by sharing a Story on his account that included a video of Harris condemning Trump’s actions following the Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. These storms struck Puerto Rico within two weeks, causing widespread destruction, and resulted in thousands of deaths. A report published in 2021 by the inspector general’s office of the housing department revealed that the Trump administration delayed over $20 billion in hurricane relief aid for Puerto Rico after the disaster.

On Instagram Stories, Bad Bunny shared a video earlier posted by Harris, where she expressed: “This election carries immense significance for Puerto Rican voters and Puerto Rico. It’s not simply a decision between Donald Trump and myself. It’s a matter of selecting between two distinct visions for our country.

He included another segment of her video in his Story, repeating three times: “I will always remember what Donald Trump failed to do when Puerto Rico required a compassionate and skilled leader. Instead of providing aid after a series of destructive hurricanes, he deserted the island and even attempted to withhold help, offering only paper towels and derogatory remarks.

On air, co-host Ana Navarro commended Bad Bunny (Benito Martínez Ocasio) during the broadcast of X.

She wrote, ‘Experiment and see,’ referring to the recent derogatory comment about Puerto Rico as a ‘floating island of trash’ made by a speaker at a Trump rally. In response, Bad Bunny, who has over 45 million followers on social media, shared Kamala Harris’ proposal for Puerto Rico.

She concluded with a message in Spanish which meant: “Thank you, Benito. A thousand, a thousand times thank you for protecting your island and the honor of your people.

Similarly, fellow Puerto Rican with an impressive 18.6 million followers on Instagram, Martin, also shared the same post, incorporating a video clip of Hinchcliffe delivering his humorous remark.

New York Representative Ritchie Torres also expressed his viewpoint on X: “Being Puerto Rican, I’m tempted to label Hinchcliffe as a racist waste, but such a term wouldn’t do justice to the concept of waste. When they step into the voting booth, Latinos should always remember the racism that Donald Trump appears eager to promote.

Additionally at the rally, Hinchcliffe humorously referred to a Black individual present, implying they resembled someone who had “sculpted watermelons,” referring to themselves.

Over the weekend, I found myself reflecting on the rally I attended. In my opinion, the speeches were an overwhelming tide of unchecked insanity, bigotry, and fear-mongering – words that don’t represent the values I stand for as a gamer and a citizen.

The gathering was a shocking exhibition of raw prejudice for all to witness, as it involved insulting Puerto Rico with hate speech, persistently asserting false claims about the 2020 election being rigged, and attempting to set the stage for similar allegations in 2024. This group is advocating that we move beyond this period of politics marked by abortion restrictions, mainstreamed outrageous conspiracy theories, and a constant barrage of senseless rhetoric that fails to address issues faced by the working class.
