As a seasoned gamer of both virtual worlds and real-life cinematic escapades, I must say that the announcement of Shrek 5 has me feeling like a kid in a candy store. My nostalgia-filled heart skipped a beat when I heard John Lithgow’s affirmative response to potentially reprising his role as the hapless Lord Farquad.
2001’s Shrek, a movie I hold close to my gaming heart, stands as an undeniable animation classic. It was the trailblazer that claimed the first Oscar for Best Animated Feature and is now esteemed among the finest films of the 2000s. The movie ignited a franchise that produced sequels, TV specials, two Puss in Boots spin-offs, a stage musical, and even a fifth sequel was confirmed earlier this year! As we wait for the sequel’s development, John Lithgow is hinting at the possibility of reprising his iconic role as Lord Farquaad.
To date, only Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphey have been officially announced to reprise their roles in the upcoming Shrek 5. During an interview with People, John Lithgow was directly asked about his potential return as the ruler of Duloc, and he gave a straightforward response.
[I’d] say yes in a minute
It’s great news indeed, and it might just make fans extremely happy. However, it doesn’t necessarily imply that the studio intends to reinstate Farquad. Additionally, there’s the lingering question about the antagonist’s destiny from the original movie long past. John Lithgow made this clear when expressing these thoughts:
It turns out it’s impossible to recover from being eaten by a dragon.
In the finale of the original Shrek movie, it was Dragon who consumed Lord Farquaad, the character who originally protected Fiona. To make matters worse, Dragon expelled its crown after consuming him. An extra scene depicted Farquaad attempting to survive within the dragon’s stomach, but given the passage of time, he would probably have been digested by now.
Alternative approaches to reintroduce Farquad exist, such as incorporating flashbacks set during or preceding the first movie’s events, or even having him appear as a ghost, as seen in the former Universal Studios attraction Shrek 4-D. However, it appears that John Lithgow hasn’t been contacted about reviving the character using these methods.
I know nothing about it and no, I’m not a part of it.
Ever since the announcement of Shrek 5 this summer, there has been a surge of excitement among fans. Immediately after it was made public, social media was flooded with memes expressing the anticipation. In fact, Al Pacino himself is eager for the movie and carries a phone case to show his dedication. With high expectations riding on the film, let’s hope it lives up to them. And here’s hoping that John Lithgow’s character Lord Farquad will make an appearance in this new ogre story as well.
Even though the new movie isn’t due out until summer 2026, there’s an action you can take before then. Why not watch the first four Shrek films online? You can discover the way to stream them by checking out our convenient guide.
