As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for engaging storylines and dynamic characters, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming BBC drama, “Wild Cherry.” The cast, led by Eve Best (“House of the Dragon”) and Carmen Ejogo (“The Penguin”), promises to deliver an intriguing tale that resonates with real-life experiences.
Actresses Eve Best, known for her role in “House of the Dragon,” and Carmen Ejogo, famous for “The Penguin,” are set to star in a new BBC drama titled “Wild Cherry” by Nicôle Lecky.
After the acclaimed BAFTA victory of Lecky’s series “Mood”, the BBC and production company Firebird Pictures (known for shows like “Wilderness” and “The Jetty”) recently announced their cast lineup for a new six-part series. Actresses Imogen Faires, who has previously starred in “Goldie’s Oldies” and “Marcella”, along with Amelia May, a fresh face, have joined the project. Other additions include Sophie Winkleman, best known from “Peep Show” and “Sanditon”, as well as Lecky herself, who not only stars in this series but also serves as an executive producer, having previously worked on “Mood” and “Sweetpea”.
Lorna, portrayed by Ejogo, is a self-made, thriving black entrepreneur from South London who has climbed her way up through sheer determination. Her childhood friend, Juliet (Best), hails from the affluent, gated community they both inhabit. Their daughters, Grace (Faires) and Allegra (May), are also best friends and enjoy a lifestyle that many teenagers can merely fantasize about. However, their tranquil lives are disrupted when Grace and Allegra become entangled in a scandalous incident at their prestigious private school. This situation forces Lorna and Juliet to pick sides, pushing their friendship to the brink. As hidden secrets and deceptions spread like wildfire through the seemingly perfect town, it becomes clear that the veneer of idyllic living conceals deep-seated elitism, deceit, and betrayal within the community.
“Following ‘House of the Dragon’, I was eager to explore a character and storyline that were completely new to me. Nicôle’s gripping script keeps me on my toes, which I enjoy, and her unique U.K. viewpoint in her storytelling appeals to me personally. I’m excited to be involved in ‘Wild Cherry’ for the BBC.
Working alongside Carmen and Eve on “Wild Cherry” has been an absolute dream come true! They’ve breathed life into this story in the most magical way. The talented ensemble cast, headed by Amelia and Imogen who are simply outstanding, have really brought the characters of Richford Lake to life. I can hardly wait for everyone to get acquainted with our residents there!
The main cast features Daniel Lapaine, Hayat Kamille, Isabelle Allen, James Murray, Jason York, Katrina Cas, Nathaniel Martello-White, Sonita Henry, Tara Webb, Will Bagnall and Hugh Quarshie. They have previously appeared in shows like ‘Catastrophe’, ‘Vikings: Valhalla’, ‘Les Misérables’, ‘The Crown’, ‘Mood’, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, ‘The Winter King’, ‘Black Cake’, ‘Phoenix Rise’, ‘A Thousand Blows’ and ‘Holby City’.
The show is being created by Firebird, a label under BBC Studios’ ownership, specifically intended for both BBC iPlayer and BBC One. Overseeing the production are executive producers Elizabeth Kilgarriff, Craig Holleworth from Firebird, as well as Lisa Walters, Lecky, Toby Macdonald, and Lucy Richer on behalf of the BBC. Additionally, Ado Yoshizaki Cassuto serves as a producer. At present, filming is taking place in Surrey, with BBC Studios planning to distribute it globally.
