As a researcher immersed in the exciting world of blockchain technology, I’m thrilled to share that the Foundation recently unveiled Testnet v1 on October 30th. This is another significant step forward as we approach the mainnet launch for the Ethereum (ETH) L2 protocol. Each milestone brings us closer to realizing our vision of a more efficient and scalable blockchain ecosystem.
The testnet is built upon the foundation of the platform’s previous development network (devnet) release. This devnet enabled developers to put the project’s concept through rigorous testing. Now, with the unveiling of Testnet v1, the zkRollup seeks to collect constructive feedback from a broader user base.
For this release, the focus is on putting development experience improvements to user testing.
A wider network of application systems built on a decentralized platform has become available, as developers explore the functionality of zkSharding in its test phase. Version 1 of this testnet provides the general public with the chance to assist in locating potential issues as various applications are subjected to stress tests. Additionally, developers will utilize the testnet to refine their tools for a smoother experience.
In November 2023, the The =nil; Foundation unveiled the Ethereum zkRollup. This layer-2 (L2) solution was designed to enhance the scalability of the Ethereum network, enabling it to handle over 60,000 transactions per second through zkSharding.
In simpler terms, zkSharding is a system that joins together zero-knowledge Rollups and sharding, allowing multiple transactions to be processed simultaneously while maintaining a shared network state. This approach lets us expand Ethereum’s capabilities without the usual drawbacks associated with modularity that developers often face.
Problems that zkSharding’s solution effectively addresses encompass issues such as the division of liquidity and security, compatibility with Ethereum’s mainnet, and the transparency and verifiability of data.
The test network is helping us move a step closer to our plan, set for Q4 2025, of officially launching the mainnet with our layer-2 protocol.
Following the completion of Testnet Version 1, we’ll proceed to Testnet Versions 2 and 3 in the second and third quarters of 2025 respectively. Our main focuses during these phases will be on zkEVM, performance testing, ensuring stability, and enhancing user experience before our mainnet launch.
