Jake Gyllenhaal Becomes Chucky's HR Manager in This Hilarious SNL Halloween Sketch

As a die-hard Saturday Night Live enthusiast who’s been tuning in since the days of Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, I can confidently say that Sarah Sherman has truly outdone herself with her portrayal of Chucky. Her unique brand of absurdism took the horror icon to new heights, leaving me in stitches!

As Halloween nears, fans of Saturday Night Live eagerly anticipate rewatching some of the funniest sketches. From David S. Pumpkins to the festive segments on Weekend Update, it’s clear that SNL really excels during the spooky period. For instance, the “Chucky” digital short that gained massive popularity after Jake Gyllenhaal hosted SNL in April 2022 is a perfect example of their Halloween brilliance.

Sarah Sherman, the beloved and quirky fan favorite on SNL, has stirred up quite a storm with her portrayal of the horror icon, Chucky. By giving the murderous doll an unusual, comical makeover, she’s added a fresh dose of hilarity to the Child’s Play franchise. On SNL, Sherman, along with some CGI humor, brought Chucky to life in a way that was over-the-top and full of energy. Her performance showcased her unique brand of absurdism as she turned Chucky into a hyperactive, profane version of the doll. The comedy in the sketch comes from the absurdity of seeing Chucky acting out in a mundane setting, such as an HR meeting, after attacking his coworkers.

However, it wouldn’t be long until HR Manager Gyllenhaal unmasked the real antagonist, or perhaps the unfortunate pawn, hidden among the office workers – none other than our colleague, Janet. Don’t forget to watch the entire sketch at the top.

The story of “Chucky” kicks off much like other horror films, featuring three colleagues (Melissa Villaseñor, Ego Nwodim, and Chloe Fineman) having a casual chat in the restroom about their irritating office mate named Janet. After discussing her habit of racing through the corridors and eating tuna for lunch every day, they shift their conversation towards her unusual quietness that makes them uneasy.

Yesterday, while we were sharing a ride, I had entirely forgotten she was with us since she didn’t speak a word throughout, as Nwodim shared. Suddenly, she appeared unexpectedly from the back seat, similar to Chucky making an appearance!

The ladies continued to chuckle until they heard a toilet flushing nearby. Oh dear, might it be Janet? The ladies paused as the stall door gradually opened, and the camera moved to show that it wasn’t Janet but rather Chucky, Sherman’s doll. As Chucky casually walked toward the sink, the ladies expressed their regrets for not noticing his presence earlier.

“Did you hear us talking?” Villaseñor’s Megan nervously asked.

Chucky responded, “Not quite, but beware when you mentioned me in relation to Janet. You shouldn’t underestimate me like that!” or “Chucky replied, ‘No, not entirely, but be cautious when you equated us, ladies. Don’t think you can trifle with me!’

Without much delay, Gyllenhaal’s HR manager summoned the agitated man and the disorganized woman (Chucky) into a meeting room after an incident where he charged at his coworkers brandishing a knife in the restroom.

Speaking candidly, I understand that no one enjoys being summoned to an HR meeting, but this morning’s events necessitated the discussion. As you’re aware, our company strictly prohibits actions like stabbing colleagues with a knife, Chucky. However, let me make it clear that we have a firm stance against bullying too. Your comments about Chucky were out of line and unjustified.

Especially comparing him to Janet,” Gyllenhaal hilariously added. “Who we all know sucks.”

“I’m sorry,” Aidy Bryant’s Janet piped up from the corner. “Why do I have to be here?”

Gyllenhaal said to Janet, “Go ahead and jot down some notes,” followed by a gentle remark, “You know, not so bright.” He then asked, “Alright, let’s figure out a way to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.

In a less than straightforward manner, Chucky seemed to complicate the intervention process, with an inclination towards violence and offensive remarks towards his coworkers. It’s puzzling how Chucky managed to secure his corporate position given his aggressive tendencies, as he brutally attacked the HR manager during a meeting by stabbing him in the leg.

“You see,” one of the women said, “He doesn’t belong here!”

Indeed, that’s correct. He emphasized, “Yes, they each have their unique tales to tell. Megan, your expertise lies in public relations, and Peggy, you have a history in the military.

He went on, causing Sherman’s doll to growl in response. “And it was an old voodoo spell you used,” he explained, “one that, when mixed with a bolt of lightning, moved your spirit into the form of a doll. That’s something unique about you that nobody else here can claim.

“He’s not even listening,” Peggy snapped.

Later on, Gyllenhaal noticed that Chucky was twirling his head similar to The Exorcist while repeating, “Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow.” (Informal)

“Well, I think we’re making progress,” Gyllenhaal said hopefully.

“Look!” Megan pointed as Chucky lit two sticks of dynamite and began maniacally laughing.

Instead of exclaiming “Oh my God!”, Gyllenhaal blurted out a similar expression and fixed his gaze on Janet. He then asked, “Janet, are you currently enjoying some tuna?

In a similar fashion to Janet inquiring about the situation, the building suddenly erupted, sending Chucky’s head soaring from the flames with an insane look on his face. The witty one-liner and spectacular visual effects make Sherman’s “Chucky” skit a worthy addition to the prestigious collection of memorable SNL Halloween sketches.
