Fans Are Just Now Noticing A Big Easter Egg In Deadpool And Wolverine, But We Spotted It In The Trailer Months Ago

As a seasoned gamer and movie buff with a penchant for spotting intricate details, I must say that the easter egg in Deadpool & Wolverine that references Master & Commander is nothing short of brilliant. My very first encounter with this naval epic left an indelible mark on my gaming heart, thanks to the immersive game adaptation that followed.

This year’s live-action movie featuring Deadpool & Wolverine has been the most successful at the box office, so it’s no wonder that as a video-on-demand title, it’s making a big splash now. With the convenience of watching it at home, many people are getting another chance to rewatch it or catch their first viewing, giving them more time to spot all the hidden references and easter eggs that might have been overlooked initially.

One of those random easter eggs has recently gone viral, as a lot of people apparently hadn’t noticed it the first time around. Not to toot our own horn or anything but we, or at least TopMob’s own Sean O’Connell, absolutely noticed it in the trailers alone. Yes, the ship from Master & Commander is among the wrecks found in The Void when Deadpool and Wolverine have their first big fight.

Not Every Deadpool & Wolverine Easter Egg Is Marvel Related

The film Deadpool & Wolverine wasn’t merely packed with humorous quips and references to the Marvel Cinematic Universe or other superhero films; instead, it largely revolved around the intricacies of the movie industry itself, with a narrative substantially rooted in Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

Consequently, numerous humorous moments in the movie were aimed at Fox Corporation. In the climactic fight between Deadpool and Wolverine in The Void, a partially destroyed 20th Century Fox emblem serves as the most apparent allusion to this. However, this isn’t the only noteworthy detail; a discerning viewer has pointed out additional references.

As a passionate fan, I couldn’t help but notice that the tweeted image has taken the internet by storm. It seems many overlooked the wrecked vessel in the backdrop, or perhaps failed to recognize it as the iconic HMS Surprise from Master & Commander. Quite fascinating!

The Master & Commander Reference Was Part Of The Film’s Larger Joke At The Expense Of Fox

Originally, when the comprehensive trailer for the joint venture of Deadpool and Wolverine was unveiled, our very own Sean O’Connell proposed a theory about the film and how the Fox logo and the HMS Surprise might tie into the narrative. Although some specifics were off-target, the overall idea – that Deadpool’s universe, encompassing also the Fox movie universe, was nearing its conclusion – proved to be remarkably accurate.

It seems that hints in recent MCU suggest some aspects from the Fox/Marvel universe might transition temporarily into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but for now, most of these franchises are essentially concluded. The Deadpool and Wolverine series, surprisingly, gave a poignant farewell. However, it’s not just these Marvel franchises that have ended; other film series have also met their end.

Originally, Master & Commander was intended to establish a series of its own. Although it’s now widely acclaimed as a great film, initially, it didn’t achieve the success necessary for sequels because of its high production cost, which made it less commercially viable at the time.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say, “The Fox franchises like Alien and Predator are still alive under Disney, but Master & Commander feels more at home in The Void. If there was even a slim chance of its revival under Fox, that ship pretty much sailed post-Disney acquisition. Yet, we gamers know exactly where to find it.
