As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that I’ve seen more plot twists and character exits than most soap operas combined. The latest shake-up in FBI has left me scratching my head more than a game of chess against an AI. Lisette Olivera, the promising newcomer to the FBI squad, is already packing her bags after just a few episodes!
In the 2024 TV lineup, FBI kicks off Season 7 this autumn, and the initial focus was arranging Tiff’s departure following summer news that Katherine Renee Kane wouldn’t be a regular cast member anymore. The seventh season has been sensitive to Tiff’s significance in Scola’s life, especially for her former partner, as they’re currently looking for someone to take over her role. However, the actor initially selected to replace her was let go before making their debut, which reminded me of what showrunner Mike Weiss had shared prior to the premiere.
FBI’s Newest Series Regular Is Already Exiting
In a recent announcement, Lisette Olivera, starring in “National Treasure: Edge of History” (streaming now on Disney+), has been declared as the new series regular for the FBI in Season 7. Interestingly, this was announced on the same day that Katherine Renee Kane’s departure from her role as Tiff was confirmed. At the time, it was revealed that her character will be Syd, an agent from the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit who is stepping away from her desk job to work in the field and team up with Scola.
It appears that Deadline reports Olivera won’t continue on FBI for an extended period, and her character will depart following only a few episodes instead. Her departure isn’t due to any performance issues but rather the role’s compatibility with the show itself. Since she is just 25 years old, it seems there might have been discrepancies between her portrayal of a seasoned special agent and her actual age.
The actress’s completed episodes are scheduled to air simultaneously, and Syd is set to take center stage in the upcoming episode on November 12 titled “Doubted.” In this installment, Sydney seeks assistance from Isobel and the team in finding a serial predator, as her sister becomes a victim of attempted kidnapping and sexual assault. The number of episodes Olivera will appear in is uncertain, as the search for a permanent partner for Scola’s character continues. Meanwhile, John Boyd discussed how his character wasn’t ready for Tiff’s departure when she left ahead of Season 7.
What Mike Weiss Told Us About Taking Over FBI
As a devoted fan, I’m excited to share that there’s been a significant behind-the-scenes shift for FBI Season 7. Mike Weiss, who previously worked on Death and Other Details, has taken over as showrunner, following Rick Eid’s departure at the end of Season 6 from his role as top boss. Intriguingly, Weiss penned the premiere himself, infusing it with echoes of classic spy thrillers like The Bourne Identity, and even writing Tiff’s departure scene. If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t miss out – you can catch up by streaming the premiere with a Paramount+ subscription!
During my conversation with Mike Weiss, he expressed a sense of having been at the FBI for an extended period. He went on to discuss his strategy for tackling CBS’ highly successful show, which had already completed six seasons and exceeded 100 episodes.
It can be quite challenging to join a show that has already produced many outstanding stories and find fresh ideas and enthusiasm. To tackle this task, I’ve brought on some new writers who I have strong faith in and enjoy collaborating with. Writing for TV involves striking a balance: you need to keep the audience engaged, but it’s essential to first captivate your own team.
As a devoted fan, I can tell you that keeping an audience hooked is no small feat for a writing team if they’re not invested in their own narratives! Over time, as a series progresses, introducing new blood into the mix can be quite beneficial. This is especially true when dealing with a long-standing cast of main characters who have been there from day one. In the case of FBI, the core includes Missy Peregrym, Zeeko Zaki, Alana de la Garza, and Jeremy Sisto, with John Boyd joining the scene in Season 2. Mike Weiss elaborated further:
In a similar vein, when you’re on an airplane and they instruct you to secure your own mask before helping others, it’s much the same with storytelling. If you’re not enjoying the narrative you’re creating, then the audience won’t find it engaging either. So, in our writers’ room, we’re essentially playing a game of coming up with the most exciting concept to develop this week, while keeping things lively and progressing smoothly.
It appears that the ongoing effort is about giving a fresh try to a new character such as Lisette Olivera’s Syd, but if this doesn’t turn out well, then moving forward to something else. For now, viewers can anticipate watching the episodes where she has been filmed, and speculate on who might fill Tiff’s role for Scola in the future.
I’m excited to share that, as a fan, I’ll have to wait for a week this fall due to CBS broadcasting the 2024 U.S. elections on November 5. But fear not, my fellow fans! FBI will be back on our screens on Tuesday, November 12 at 8 p.m. ET, with Lisette Olivera stepping into her role as Syd for a limited run as a series regular. As usual, FBI will kick off CBS’ prime-time lineup before FBI: International (with an undercover agent causing quite the surprise) airs at 9 p.m. ET, followed by FBI: Most Wanted as Nina grapples with her breaking point at 10 p.m. ET. Can’t wait to join you all for another exciting week of FBI!
