Artists Construct a 10-Billion Person Megalopolis in ‘Views of Planet City’

As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds and architectural marvels, I must say that the SCI-Arc Gallery’s exhibition, “Views of Planet City,” resonates deeply with my spirit. The idea of a sustainable, unified cityscape where humanity coexists harmoniously is not just a fascinating concept but also a testament to the power of creativity and collaboration.

The SCI-Arc Gallery is showcasing an exhibition titled “Views of Planet City“, which originated from artist, architect, and curator Liam Young’s long-term environmental art initiative that started in 2021. This exhibition invites us to consider a daring reimagining of a sustainable future, where people decide to coexist in a vast urban metropolis, effectively handing over much of the Earth for a grand restoration project.

With Young, Jennifer Chen, John Cooper, Damjan Jovanovic, and Angelica Lorenzi, they create distinct visions of our common future. Their works go beyond just showing images and movies of densely populated megacities, displaying objects that originate from them: high-resolution satellite images, costumes and masks that reflect a blend of various global cultures, artifacts symbolizing the preservation of nature, and a video game that explores the restorative capabilities of artificial intelligence. In essence, they combine everyday technologies with an optimistic depiction of urban expansion. The showcase also highlights the research resources fueling these imaginative interpretations of our planet’s destiny.

As a passionate admirer, I’m thrilled to be a part of Getty’s PST ART 2024, one of numerous exhibitions and programs that delve into the captivating fusion of art and science. This exhibition serves as a catalyst, redefining our existing knowledge systems – from manufacturing and recycling, to agriculture, artistic expression, and societal structures. It’s a bold response to the climate crisis, fostering a cultural transformation that paves the way for a more collaborative, optimistic future.

Views of Planet City is now on view through February 14, 2025.
