Eddie Murphy Reunites With Dreamgirls Director for George Clinton Biopic

As a cinema devotee with a deep appreciation for music and its impact on culture, I am thrilled at the prospect of Eddie Murphy reteaming with Bill Condon for the biopic about George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic. Having grown up in the 70s and 80s, their music was an integral part of my formative years, providing a soundtrack to my youth that still resonates today.

Bill Condon believes Eddie Murphy possesses the necessary funk to portray George Clinton in his upcoming movie about the Parliament-Funkadelic leader. This project will be their first collaboration since Murphy’s Academy Award-nominated role in Dreamgirls.

Initially broken by Deadline in an exclusive scoop, Virgil Williams is currently revising the script for the movie, which originally stemmed from an idea conceived by Max Werner. The project’s inception was spearheaded by Catherine Davis, a devoted fan of George Clinton, who presented the concept to Murphy. In collaboration with John Davis, Catherine Davis, Greg Yolen, Charisse Hewitt-Webster, Archie Ivy, Jeff Jampol, and George Clinton himself, Murphy will be overseeing the film’s production.

Who is George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic?

The movie is said to be inspired by George Clinton’s memoir titled “Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard On You?”. It promises to reveal the lesser-known account of this funk genre pioneer and his challenging path towards establishing the musical group Parliament-Funkadelic.

For decades, Clinton has been a prominent figure in the music industry, with their unique band style and eccentric live acts captivating audiences globally. Alongside enduring hits such as “Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)”, Parliament-Funkadelic gained fame for their psychedelic and surrealistic tunes and motifs. Their unusual beginnings, distinctive fashion choices, quirky humor, and eventual success reshaped the musical landscape, notably during the 1970s, leaving a significant impact on music culture.

Generally recognized as a musical group, they amassed thirteen top ten hits on the U.S. R&B charts from 1967 to 1983, starting out as a doo-wop band in suburban New Jersey (where Clinton was born). Their music has had a profound impact on numerous bands and genres, ranging from punk and hip-hop to techno. It is also believed that their legacy played a significant role in the emergence of Afrofuturism.

Condon’s most recent project is the feature adaptation of the popular (and Tony Award-winning) Broadway musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, starring Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna. As for Murphy, he can next be seen in the Keke Palmer and Pete Davidson starrer, The Pickup. He also recently starred in the long-awaited sequel, Beverly Hills Cop 4: Axel F. There are also reports that he will be returning to the Shrek universe in the much anticipated 5th installment of that franchise, where he played the beloved Donkey.
