'We Never Saw Her Land': Patti Lupone Gets Candid About Her Character's Fate In Agatha All Along, And As A Marvel Fan I Agree

As a lifelong Marvel fan and a theater enthusiast who’s seen more Broadway shows than I can count on one hand, I can confidently say that Patti Lupone’s character Lilia in Agatha All Along is far from dead. Let me tell you why.

Spoilers ahead for Agatha All Along.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is famous for consistently delivering fresh content in theaters and on Disney+. However, among the many Marvel movies, the TV shows “WandaVision” and its spinoff “Agatha All Along” have stood out particularly among fans who have followed the series chronologically. The latter series, which recently concluded its season, boasted a talented cast led by Patti Lupone, a renowned actress. Recently, she revealed details about her character’s ending, and as a Marvel enthusiast, I concur with her assessment.

Before the two-part finale of “Agatha All Along“, the seventh episode focused on Patti Lupone’s character, Lilia. After the enigma surrounding her memories was unraveled, it appeared as though she had given up her life to obliterate the Salem Seven and safeguard the coven. I recently had the opportunity to converse with Ms. Lupone about her experience within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Time and again, she emphasized “she never touched down,” which, coming from someone familiar with Marvel’s conventions, is a well-taken point.

In Episode 7, Lilia demonstrated an extraordinary performance in the divination trial. Later, she aided her coven’s escape and chose to remain with The Salem Seven. In a dramatic sequence, she manipulated gravity, causing the antagonists to plummet onto swords and meet their demise. However, when it seemed Lilia was falling fatally, the scene ended before showing her getting impaled or dying. As a result, the outcome of Lilia’s story is left uncertain, leading Patti Lupone to speculate that perhaps Lilia survived within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

In the realm of horror and superhero genres, there’s a fan-favorite rule: if a character’s death isn’t shown explicitly, it could mean they’re still alive. Lilia was seen plummeting, but we never witnessed her landing on the sword like The Seven. Given this unwritten rule, and my desire to see Lupone return to the MCU, I find myself aligning with this reasoning about the character’s survival status.

There’s another plot-related reason why I think Lilia might still be with us: her instructions telling Agatha to duck when Rio calls her a coward during their final battle. While Lupone’s character uses divination to experience time in a non-linear way, she wasn’t seen during the epic battle outside of Agatha’s Westview home. And if she’s already died at that point, how would she have the knowledge of what was going to happen?

In the Disney+ series “Agatha All Along”, it’s known that Sharon Davis, Alice Wu-Gullive, and Kathryn Hahn’s title character met their end. However, the fate of Lilia remains unclear. Given that Jennifer has regained her powers and lived through her ordeal, it would be quite rewarding to witness a reunion between Jennifer and Lilia in a future Marvel project. I’m inclined to agree with Patti Lupone’s “she didn’t land” theory, not only because I appreciate the Broadway legend but also due to my hopes for a happy resolution for these characters.

You can now enjoy “Agatha All Along” from start to finish on Disney+. Make sure to glance at the television premiere schedule to organize your upcoming binge-watching sessions.
