This Artist Legally Changed His Name to Anish Kapoor

As a longtime admirer and follower of the art world, I must say that Stuart Semple’s latest move is nothing short of brilliant! His relentless pursuit to challenge the status quo and his unyielding spirit have always been inspiring. This time, he’s taken his feud with Anish Kapoor to a whole new level by legally changing his name to “Anish Kapoor” – now that’s what I call making a statement!

In a continuation of Stuart Semple’s long-standing dispute with Anish Kapoor that has lasted for nearly a decade, the British artist and activist has decided to legally adopt the name “Anish Kapoor” as a sign of protest. To mark this change, he is producing a new limited-edition print, titled “NOT A NICHE MAN.

Semple’s recent action involves renaming something, which is his latest response to Kapoor securing exclusive rights to Vantablack, a unique black pigment often used in art. Despite no longer being the darkest material on earth, this deal has caused much debate within the artistic community due to its exclusivity. Semple’s move, blending elements of performance and protest, criticizes the practice he refers to as “color monopolization” – the commercial control over specific colors such as Mattel’s Barbie pink, Tiffany blue, and Cadbury purple.

Over the past few years, Semple has responded by introducing intensely saturated pigments into the market. This move, however, has temporarily slowed down his painting work. Yet, his brand, Culture Hustle, has experienced unprecedented popularity, debuting the shiniest glitter, the brightest pink, and a series of ultra-black paints. With the release of Black 4.0 – a paint that absorbs 99.96% of light, similar to Vantablack – Semple raises intriguing questions about artistic property rights and accessibility.

As a gaming enthusiast, if you’ve been yearning to snag one of Kapoor’s iconic pieces, here’s your chance! Semple’s latest collection is now up for grabs from today until November 4, 2024. The price? A modest £154 GBP ($203 USD). In this package, you’ll receive a vibrant, full-color copy of his official name change document and an exclusive archival giclée piece featuring a hand-painted Black 4.0 that boldly states, “I’m not just a niche guy. I’m Anish, man.
