Not Only Did Moana 2 Filmmakers Listen To Cries For More Pua, They Also Got Me More Excited About The Adorable Pig’s Role In The Sequel

As a passionate Disney enthusiast who has followed the adventures of Moana since her debut, I must say that the news about Pua’s expanded role in “Moana 2” has filled me with unbridled excitement! Growing up watching Disney movies, I always felt a deep connection with the animal sidekicks, and Pua was no exception. I remember countless times rewinding the DVD just to watch the adorable pig’s antics.

Back in 2016, Disney fans developed a fondness for the characters Pua and Heihei from Moana. Many felt that Moana’s lovable pig companion, Pua, should have joined her on her journey. Now, with Moana 2 scheduled for release in 2024, it seems that giving Pua his due recognition was a priority for the filmmakers.

As a gaming enthusiast, I recently had an exclusive sneak peek into the early scenes of Moana 2 at Walt Disney Animation Studios, where I got to chat with directors David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller (who also co-wrote with Jared Bush). They revealed that they listened to fans’ requests for more Pua and ensured his presence in the sequel. In Dana’s own words: “We heard our audience asking for more of everyone’s favorite pig, Pua, so we made sure he played a significant role in Moana 2.

In the first movie on the canoe, it was clear that the audience adored Pua. Although I wasn’t present back then, we’ve now added Pua to the canoe. Let me tell you, Pua surpassed our expectations in terms of depth. He even got his own storyline. That’s what makes creating this film so enjoyable – we give beloved characters like Pua new and exciting journeys, both literally and figuratively speaking.

In the upcoming sequel to Moana, a new directorial duo takes over from John Musker and Ron Clements who directed the 2016 original. Interestingly, they are making an effort to expand Pua’s role significantly, which was expected considering the strong demand for more screen time for this adorable character in the first film. However, what caught me off guard is that Pua will reportedly delve into “unexplored dimensions.” I was curious about this statement and here’s what Miller had to say:

It seems to me that every character in the movie, Moana among them, experiences significant growth, stepping far beyond their known selves, which applies equally to Pua. I’ll go ahead and say it: Hei Hei gets a brief moment too, considering he’s still a bit of a dimwit chicken. This is a film all about personal development, relationships, and self-transformation, and no one escapes its impact.

In essence, everyone seems eager for Pua, the lovable pig, to have a larger role in a future Moana film, providing additional adorable scenes. However, what truly piques my interest is the revelation that Pua will be woven into the core themes of the story and develop alongside the other characters. I’m curious about what they mean when they say Pua will join Moana on her journey this time, and how his presence in the canoe might alter Moana’s adventures.

As a gaming enthusiast diving into the world of animated films, I’m excited to share that three years have passed since the epic tale of Moana, and if you pay close attention in the upcoming sequel, you’ll spot Pua looking a bit more mature. Director David Derrick Jr. has given us a sneak peek into Pua’s new appearance in this movie: his design reflects the passage of time.

If you observe carefully, Pua appears to be slightly older and larger now. You can see a tiny bud of a tusk growing from him.

In case you missed it, here’s a sneak peek at the latest design for Pua from the upcoming movie “Moana 2”, as illustrated by one of the artists at Walt Disney Animation Studios:
