As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for talent and a knack for uncovering hidden gems, I find it fascinating to delve into the unique stories behind the creation of captivating cinematic masterpieces. One such instance is the making of October, a film that beautifully showcases the journey of an ordinary man named Dan, played by none other than Varun Dhawan.
In 2018, Varun Dhawan teamed up with Shoojit Sircar for the first time in the film October, a dramatic production. Before casting him for the movie, the director had no prior interaction or exposure to his work. However, what caught the director’s attention was not Varun’s polished acting skills but rather his bumbling and uncomfortable demeanor during their meeting. This unique trait, it turned out, held the key to Varun’s lead role in the film.
In a conversation with Unfiltered by Samdish, Shoojit Sircar was asked about why he chose to work with Varun Dhawan on the movie October. The director explained that it was because Dhawan had been persistently reaching out to him, insisting they meet. At the time, Sircar was in the process of casting for his 2018 drama film and had considered various actors, but he couldn’t find the right fit for the main character named Dan.
One day when the director was about to depart for Kolkata, Varun phoned him early in the morning to ask where he was and express his desire to meet. The director of Vicky Donor responded by telling Varun to come immediately. Still groggy from waking up, Varun showed up at Sircar’s office wearing a pajama and t-shirt. Shoojit noted that Varun appeared uncoordinated as he walked in. He went on to share an amusing detail: the actor accidentally spilled water on the floor and tried cleaning it with a tissue. Shortly after, he knocked over his tea and stained his pants while continuing their conversation.
Instead of focusing on Varun himself, the filmmaker was observing his lead actor within him. He found Varun’s behavior peculiar, seeing in it a reflection of Dan’s uncertainty. There was something in Varun’s eyes that intrigued Sircar, and he managed to catch it. Upon returning from Kolkata, Sircar spoke with writer Juhi Chaturvedi and producer Ronnie Lahiri about this observation, and they all agreed on casting Varun for the role.
During our conversation, Sircar shared an interesting tidbit – people often wonder how he got Varun Dhawan to perform. In response, the director admitted, “He’s not the type of actor I usually work with, I haven’t seen many of his films, just brief glimpses.” When asked if Bhediya’s actor met his expectations, the filmmaker praised him as ‘brilliant and fantastic,’ expressing surprise at his talent. The director of October went on to say, “I didn’t hand him the script; he submitted himself to me. I only gave him the first half.” When asked why he didn’t give Varun the entire script, the filmmaker explained that he wanted him to be natural and not pre-plan his character.
