Gladiator II Star Pedro Pascal Underwent Intense Training to Perform Stunts

As a long-time movie enthusiast and connoisseur of all things cinema, I must admit that I am thoroughly intrigued by the upcoming sequel to the iconic film, Gladiator 2. The behind-the-scenes glimpse into the training regimens of Pedro Pascal and Paul Mescal has only added fuel to my anticipation for this blockbuster.

Fans of Ridley Scott’s upcoming sequel to the hit action movie “Gladiator” won’t be able to catch it in cinemas until November 22nd. However, Pedro Pascal, a star from “Gladiator 2”, recently shared intriguing behind-the-scenes details about his role during an interview. At 49 years old, Pedro spoke candidly about the challenges he faced getting into shape for the film, which contrasted significantly with Paul Mescal’s more grueling training routine that he described as “fun.

In the span of more than two decades between Pascal and Mescal, it’s not surprising they prepared for their roles in “Gladiator 2” differently. As shared with Entertainment Weekly, Pascal opted to build muscle, although no such instruction was given. This move aimed to reduce potential injuries during filming (unfortunately, it didn’t). Connie Nielsen, reprising her role from the first Gladiator, praised Pascal’s appearance as a result of his training. Director Ridley Scott, however, seemed less impressed, merely commenting on Pascal’s weight loss: “Oh, your belly is gone.” Nonetheless, Pascal felt his efforts weren’t wasted, as Scott usually demanded continuous filming of battle scenes, necessitating everything to be ready and in place.

Previously, I could rise each day and perform those tasks, yet circumstances shifted, prompting me to desire the same abilities. Consequently, I dedicated significant time to practice and prepare myself in order to accomplish them again.

In a slightly different approach for the preparation of “Gladiator 2“, Mescal chose an unconventional path. Earlier, he had termed his physical training as “fun,” which led Pascal to remark: “‘Oh, it must have been. It probably was fun for him. Maybe it would’ve been enjoyable for me too, if I were two decades younger.’” However, Mescal also disclosed that he continued to consume alcohol and smoke throughout his training, which might have added to the amusement. In simpler terms, “I consumed a lot of chicken and lifted heavy weights,” Mescal stated. “I was working with a trainer who constantly circled around me like a shark, saying ‘There’s a canvas to work on.’ He went all out, and I saw him daily. It was fun.

Will Gladiator 2 Match the Success of the Original?

The prospects for “Gladiator 2” appear promising, given its distinguished cast and favorable early feedback. Notably, Nielsen returns to the series, while Pascal, Mescal, and the esteemed Denzel Washington join as fresh faces. This ensemble promises a fresh, engaging narrative set against the familiar backdrop of the film. Initial responses applaud “Gladiator 2” as Scott’s finest work in years, praising Washington’s intense portrayal as the main antagonist and lauding the powerhouse trio at the film’s core. Although some reviewers felt that the emotional depth of the original was absent, these criticisms seemed to be the exception rather than the rule, with most commending “Gladiator 2” as a worthy successor to its Academy Award-winning predecessor.

Despite the buzz surrounding “Gladiator 2”, it doesn’t compare to one of Pascal’s most thrilling ventures. The second season of the post-apocalyptic drama “The Last of Us“, eagerly awaited by fans since its successful premiere in 2023, has recently wrapped up filming according to one of its writers on X. This means that we can expect Joel and Ellie back on our screens soon. In the interim, Pascal is also involved with Dreamworks’ “The Wild Robot“, which continues to draw large audiences at the box office.
