Salman Khan’s Veer director Anil Sharma says film failed because of its problematic climax; 'Last ke 15-20 minute picture ke...'

As a long-time fan who has witnessed the highs and lows of Bollywood, I must say that the story behind Veer’s box office failure is quite intriguing. Anil Sharma’s admission about the problematic climax being a significant factor in the film’s underperformance is enlightening. It’s fascinating to learn that even a seasoned director like Anil struggled with the same issues that many of us armchair critics face when evaluating films.

Salman Khan frequently expressed his aspiration to become a writer and penned lyrics and stories for several of his movies. One movie scripted by Salman Khan is Anil Sharma’s 2010 release, Veer. Unfortunately, this film did not fare well at the box office. More recently, the director admitted that one of the main reasons for the film’s failure was its problematic ending.

When news broke out that Gadar director Anil Sharma would team up with Salman Khan on a movie, fans eagerly awaited their collaboration. However, they ended up feeling let down by the project. In an interview with The Lallantop, Anil shared his thoughts on why the film didn’t succeed, and he pointed out that the finale played a significant role in its downfall.

As an ardent admirer, let me share my perspective on this cinematic masterpiece. I, along with director Sharma, poured our hearts into its creation, and I truly believe it stands as the actor’s most outstanding performance yet. Yet, despite the overall brilliance of the film, I found myself somewhat disappointed by the climax focusing on the father-son conflict. It just didn’t resonate as powerfully as I had hoped.

In the filmmaker’s own words, he disclosed that the central conflict in the movie had always been part of the original script and expressed it as follows: “I always felt curious about why the father and son were engaged in a struggle. However, I came to understand that the storyline was Salman Khan’s brainchild, who intended for the confrontation to unfold.

Anil shared his discussion with Salman Khan Senior, the father of Tiger 3 actor, where they both agreed there wouldn’t be any disagreement between parent and child. However, the director of Gadar 2 put in a lot of effort to provide a Ramayana reference for the ending to appear reasonable, but he wasn’t fully convinced by his own solution.

Additionally, the team behind Suhaag shared that they initially conceived an alternative ending for the movie. However, they opted to keep the original conclusion, and now they believe that the movie might have fared better without it.

The movie was extended by approximately 15 to 20 minutes in length, which turned out to be one of the reasons for its mediocre box office reception.

2010 saw the release of the movie “Veer”, featuring prominently in it actors like Salman Khan, Mithun Chakraborty, Jackie Shroff, Zareen Khan, and Sohail Khan.
