The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Showrunner Just Stoked My Hopes Of Andrew Lincoln Reuniting With Norman Reedus

As a die-hard fan of “The Walking Dead” franchise for over a decade now, I’ve seen it all – from the heart-wrenching moments to the jaw-dropping surprises. The news about Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride reprising their roles in “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” Season 2 was music to my ears! And while I’m still holding onto hope that we might see Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) again, I understand the challenges of coordinating schedules and storylines across multiple series.

Only mild spoilers below for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’s Season 2 finale, for those who haven’t yet watched on AMC or with an AMC+ subscription.

Fans of “The Walking Dead” finally got to see Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride together again on screen, playing Daryl and Carol in the second season of AMC’s spinoff horror-drama, titled “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon“. Although it had been just two years since the original series’ heartrending finale, given that McBride was initially intended to star alongside him in Season 1, the wait seemed longer. However, one can’t help but wonder what it would have been like to see Reedus acting opposite Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes.

As a die-hard fan of The Walking Dead, I’ve often pondered about an idea that seems too good to be true. However, there’s a glimmer of hope as the showrunner of Daryl Dixon himself, David Zabel, hinted at it during his interview with THR. He spoke about wrapping up Season 2 and what they’ve been able to explore so far in early Season 3 production. What’s even more exciting is that he seems quite optimistic about the show’s future, suggesting that we might see many more seasons down the line!

I’ve discussed the idea with Norman, and it’s quite an exciting prospect. However, it remains uncertain whether or not we’ll be moving forward with Season 4 at this point.

Despite Daryl Dixon’s weekly viewership not reaching The Walking Dead’s mid-run rating peaks, it’s evident that AMC is providing ample support and there will likely be another season featuring European zombies and their evolved counterparts. Out of the four spinoffs of The Walking Dead, only two have survived a single season: the anthology series Tales of… and the Rick and Michonne reunion drama, Fear The Walking Dead.

The Story Behind Why The Walking Dead’s Daryl Dixon Never Appeared In Robert Kirkman’s Comic Book

Given Danai Gurira and Andrew Lincoln’s active acting careers and personal commitments, as well as their not expressing a strong desire for an extended comeback in the post-apocalyptic series, it seems unlikely that they will return. This is further supported by the emotional scene where Rick, Michonne, and Judith reunited, and R.J. met his father for the first time.

For fans who always keep an open mind about the chance of old characters reappearing in this universe, David Zabel’s comments on Daryl Dixon’s future strongly imply that other familiar faces will make a comeback in this spinoff, regardless of whether Rick is the character he specifically mentions. Talking about the freedom from story limitations, he stated:

I’ve got quite a lot of independence in my role. I frequently consult with Scott M. Gimple, our franchise’s chief creative officer, who has told me to continue as I am for now, with no restrictions. However, I suspect that at some stage, certain decisions might be influenced by the actions and locations of other characters. So, it remains uncertain if Negan will sail across the Hudson River and eventually end up in Europe.

In essence, Zabel seems to be referring to Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s character, Negan from “The Walking Dead” franchise, when discussing potential plotlines for future seasons of Daryl Dixon. Given that Negan is expected to cause chaos in New York City on “TWD: Dead City,” with Season 2 slated for release around the 2025 TV schedule, it appears unlikely that either Negan or Lauren Cohan’s character Maggie will cross over for an episode due to the possibility that the show may be nearing its end.

Additionally, interviews with creatives and performers from Marvel, DC, Star Wars, and other major entertainment franchises have taught us that people seldom give honest spontaneous responses about characters who might reappear. This is because a casual response could potentially reveal future plans of which the respondent is unaware. Consequently, while Zabel hinted at Negan as a possible later-season appearance, I’m skeptical that this will ever happen.

But I do think it theoretically leaves the door open for anyone besides Negan to appear on Daryl Dixon. And while it’d be cool to see him crossing paths again with Lauren Ridloff’s Connie and Khary Payton’s Ezekiel and others, it remains wild to me that the last time Norman Reedus and Andrew Lincoln were together as Daryl and Rick was early on in Season 9 back in 2018. And this franchise cannot wrap itself up without more of that.

It’s clear why The Ones Who Live felt compelled to reunite Richonne on their prosperous land, but if there’s any more for Rick Grimes to accomplish in this fictional universe, it would be heartwarming to see him embrace Daryl once more. Additionally, ideally, he might raise his own offspring, but for the sake of delighting viewers, perhaps Rick should learn how to swim so that he can reach Europe by the time Season 6 begins.

Both seasons of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon are available to stream on AMC+.
