As a long-time gamer and movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment about the canceled Hulk Hogan biopic featuring Chris Hemsworth. Having grown up watching Hulk Hogan dominate the wrestling ring, and then witnessing Hemsworth’s transformation into Thor, this seemed like a perfect blend of two worlds that I couldn’t wait to see unfold.
In the Marvel movies, Chris Hemsworth teamed up with The Incredible Hulk; however, he was preparing to collaborate with a different Hulk – Hulk Hogan. In 2019, it was announced that Hemsworth would portray the iconic wrestler in a Netflix biopic production. Unfortunately, fans were left disappointed when the project was canceled, and Hogan shared insights into what truly transpired behind the scenes.
Playing Thor may have made Chris Hemsworth one of the world’s highest-paid actors, but he’s since played so many roles that have departed from his action-hero trope. He got fast and furious with Daniel Bruhl playing race car driver James Hunt in Rush, cast in Bad Times at the El Royale as a manipulative cult leader, and first mate Owen Chase in Ron Howard’s In the Heart of the Sea, to name a few.
Initially, Chris Hemsworth was set to portray a character distinct from his previous roles, specifically Hulk Hogan in an upcoming Netflix biographical film. I was excited to witness Hemsworth sporting the iconic mustache and bulking up for wrestling, but unfortunately, Hulk Hogan himself revealed that the project had been canceled. In a recent interview on the PBD Podcast, Hogan discussed the actual reasons behind the scrapped biopic.
In the contract, there seemed to be an oversight, as Patrick Bet-David pointed out when he criticized Netflix for their error. The payment was due at an incorrect time. The script, written by Scott Silver, who’s worked on films like Joker and Wolf of Wall Street, was simply extraordinary. When I read it, my response was something like, “Wow, this is truly exceptional.” During that period, I praised him for the positive aspects of wrestling.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to say, it seems like the script for the Netflix project had all the makings of a hit, but the business side of things just didn’t quite click. However, Hulk Hogan decided to step back from the Netflix biopic, worried that people might only remember him by his portrayal in the series. Despite loving the Oscar-worthy script for this sports biopic, he also found it rather grim because the movie was going to delve into both the good and bad aspects of professional wrestling. Now, being a man who’s faced some tough times – like my high-profile divorce, that sex tape scandal, and the physical toll wrestling took on me – I have a hunch that the planned Netflix film was going to tackle some of those heavy events in his life.
Watching Chris Hemsworth, known for his role as the muscular Thor from Asgard in the Marvel movies, embody the larger-than-life character of Hulk Hogan in a wrestling setting would have been an exhilarating spectacle. Given his past performances and the depth he’s shown in those roles, it’s not hard to imagine Hemsworth convincingly portraying Hogan as a force to be reckoned with in the wrestling world. The idea of seeing him bring out both Hogan’s larger-than-life persona and the emotional complexities he faced in his personal life is truly intriguing.
Beyond simply sporting the iconic bleach-blonde mustache and adopting an ’80s American accent, Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal of “Hollywood” Hogan would necessitate him undergoing a rigorous transformation similar to his previous roles. Known for his impressive physique from films like the Marvel’s Thor series, Hemsworth trains multiple times daily and maintains a diet rich in protein and vegetables. Moreover, he drastically changed his body for the film In the Heart of the Sea by following a specialized diet and training regimen called “Lost at Sea,” which led him to lose significant weight.
Despite the Hulk Hogan biopic not yet being fully produced, Chris Hemsworth demonstrated his dedication as an actor by preparing physically for the role. He shared that he was getting even more muscular than Thor, increasing his size significantly. Given how imposing Hulk Hogan looked in the wrestling ring, this transformation makes perfect sense. Since the Netflix Hulk Hogan biopic is no longer happening, we’ll have to content ourselves with a fan concept of what Hemsworth would look like as the legendary wrestler.
Unfortunately, it’s disappointing that errors in Netflix business negotiations led to the cancellation of the planned Hulk Hogan biopic starring Chris Hemsworth. I was eagerly anticipating Hemsworth’s portrayal of the transformative character who captivated the wrestling world in the ’80s. Since Hogan has expressed that his life story could be told, let’s hope another streaming service or production company will seize this opportunity to create a biopic, documentary, or miniseries, as Hogan himself desired.
Even though the Hulk Hogan biography film hasn’t been made yet, don’t forget to check out Netflix’s 2024 movie lineup to stay up-to-date with the newest movies available for streaming.
