Nivada Grenchen Launches an Expedition-Ready Antarctic GMT Watch

As a seasoned traveler who has navigated through various time zones more times than I can count, this Nivada Grenchen Antarctic GMT reissue catches my eye with its vintage charm and practical functionality. The watch’s design harks back to the ’60s and ’70s, a period that saw many daring expeditions and adventures, which resonates deeply with my own spirit of exploration.

In their recent reveal, the autonomous timepiece brand, Nivada Gretchen, has reintroduced an unusual GMT model inspired by Antarctica from their historical collection.

The redesigned model carries a strong sense of nostalgia, drawing inspiration from the ’60s and ’70s in its design elements. Praised by its manufacturer as “expedition-worthy,” this timepiece boasts an EPSA-engineered watch case, renowned for its “Super-Compressor” technology that utilizes water pressure to squeeze the case tightly against its seal.

The dial of this watch is a flat, dark color, similar to matte black, accompanied by a dual-tone GMT ring. This ring features indices and hands styled like batons, filled with light-emitting material (lume). There are two winding crowns on the timepiece itself; one operates the 24-hour bezel, while the other is for adjusting the watch’s settings.

The heart of this 36mm timepiece is the SOPROD GMT movement, offering a power reserve of 42 hours. Just like past interpretations of the Antarctic collection, the caseback showcases a gold medallion emblem depicting a penguin, symbolizing the watch’s history.

The Antarctic GMT from Nivada Grenchen begins at $1,600 USD. This model comes in three distinct styles: a “Beads of Rice” steel band, as well as brown or black leather straps. Moreover, they will introduce a 99-piece limited edition Tropical variant.
