‘Moana 2’ Tracking for Record-Shattering $125M-$135M Thanksgiving Opening

As a seasoned gamer and moviegoer who has witnessed the evolution of Disney animations over the past few decades, I must say, the upcoming release of Moana 2 is like a dream come true! The original Moana was an enchanting journey that left me yearning for more, and it seems like my wish has finally been granted.

According to industry insiders who have shared data with The Hollywood Reporter, Walt Disney Animation’s movie “Moana 2” is expected to break records by earning between $125 million and $135 million during the five-day period spanning Thanksgiving.

The follow-up is set to release on November 23, which happens to be a Wednesday. This particular long holiday weekend is known for being one of the most profitable periods in cinema history, and this year’s festivities look promising with an abundance of exciting releases. Among them are Moana 2, Gladiator II from Paramount, and Universal’s grand musical production Wicked. The latter two films will premiere a day earlier, on November 22, to take advantage of the holiday rush. Both are projected to perform well at the box office, indicating that total revenue could reach an all-time high, primarily driven by the anticipated success of Moana 2.

If predictions are accurate, the upcoming animated sequel is projected to achieve the highest five-day domestic box office debut ever during Thanksgiving, surpassing the current record set by Disney Animation’s Frozen ($93.6 million). Additionally, it would also establish a new record for the highest five-day Thanksgiving gross in history, unadjusted for inflation. Unlike Frozen II, which debuted on the weekend before the holiday, this sequel is slated to open midweek, and if it meets expectations, it could outperform Frozen II‘s five-day earnings of $125 million.

Initially released on a Wednesday preceding Thanksgiving, Moana (the original) garnered an impressive five-day domestic debut of approximately $82.1 million, with $56 million earned over the three-day weekend. The film’s continued appeal is evident as it was the most-streamed movie across all platforms in 2023, according to Nielsen, having been released in 2016 and grossing over $687 million globally.

Originally conceived for television, Moana 2 underwent a transformation into a theatrical follow-up. Composed by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, the new film boasts production from Christina Chen and Yvett Merino.

Under the guidance of directors David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, the sequel brings back voice actors Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson. The narrative unfolds with Moana setting sail on an unforeseen journey into ancient waters, prompted by a message from her ancestors. In this story, Dwayne Johnson once again voices the character of demigod Maui.

The initial 24-hour view count for the movie trailer released in May surpassed any other Disney animated film trailer record, with a staggering 178 million people tuning in, and this colossal empire includes both Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar (notably, Moana belongs to Disney Animation).

More recently, Moana 2 also set a record for first-day advance ticket sales.
