Ryan Reynolds' The Proposal is Now a Streaming Hit on Disney+

As a cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the recent surge in popularity of the 2009 rom-com “The Proposal” on Disney+ is nothing short of fascinating. Having witnessed Ryan Reynolds‘ meteoric rise to fame since his days on “Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place,” it’s clear that the impending arrival of Deadpool and Wolverine on the platform has undoubtedly played a role in this revival.

After being relatively unknown for several years, the 2009 romantic comedy starring Ryan Reynolds has unexpectedly become popular on Disney+’s global rankings. Although the movie has been accessible across numerous platforms in the U.S., such as Hulu, Freevee, Prime Video, and others, it’s garnering increased attention in many countries due to Disney+ promoting it strategically. The reason for this promotion is to capitalize on the buzz that Reynolds is expected to generate on the platform with the upcoming releases of Deadpool and Wolverine.

If you recall watching Deadpool and Wolverine together in theaters or on streaming platforms, you might remember a humorous shout-out to the film titled “The Proposal” during the scene featuring the long-haired, gentle-mannered version of Deadpool – just before he met a gruesome end (my apologies for any spoilers). The same joke was also a nod to Deadpool’s signature self-referential humor that breaks the fourth wall, implying that not every movie reference can be successfully incorporated. However, maybe it can.

It’s quite intriguing that there seems to be a surge of interest in the movie The Proposal. It’s tough not to think that the upcoming release of Deadpool & Wolverine on Disney+ might have something to do with it. After all, with just days left before subscribers can watch the Marvel behemoth as many times as they like, it wouldn’t be surprising if Ryan Reynolds’ face on the poster for The Proposal piques curiosity and encourages viewers to give it a try in the meantime. If you squint just right, Sandra Bullock might even resemble Hugh Jackman…that’s quite an unsettling thought.

What is The Proposal About?

In this recently relevant scenario, book editor Margaret (Bullock) finds herself threatened with expulsion from the United States. To avoid this, she concocts a scheme to trick her assistant into a sham marriage. Andrew, played by Reynolds, is the proposed spouse, who stands to gain a promotion if the ruse succeeds. However, Margaret didn’t foresee that the arrangement would involve meeting Andrew’s family, adding an unexpected complication to the deal. As typical romantic comedy tropes unfold, the two find themselves developing feelings for each other beyond their initial expectations.

In 2009, The Proposal became a massive box office hit for Reynolds and Bullock, grossing over $317 million globally against a production budget of $40 million. However, while audiences were eager to see it in theaters, critical acclaim was somewhat subdued. The movie currently has a 45% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting its relatively safe and predictable narrative. Nevertheless, the film benefited greatly from the exceptional chemistry between its leading actors, which drew much praise from critics.

Romantic comedies have experienced a slight comeback in recent times, as evidenced by unexpected box office hits such as “Anyone But You”. Yet, there’s an ever-present group of viewers who crave a bit of nostalgia along with their sweet storylines, and this is being demonstrated currently as 15 years after its debut, “The Proposal” is capturing a fresh audience on streaming platforms.
