As a dedicated fan of 9-1-1 who has weathered through countless episodes and emotional rollercoasters, I find myself deeply invested in the lives of the characters, particularly Buck. The latest episode left me with a heavy heart, as the breakup between him and Tommy felt like a gut punch.
Spoilers lie ahead for Season 8, Episode 6 of 9-1-1, “Confessions.”
The eighth season of 9-1-1 aired during the 2024 TV schedule, and so far it’s been quite emotional. In addition to testing Athena and Bobby yet again in the season premiere, Buck has been grappling with self-discovery following his coming out in the previous season. However, his relationship with Tommy encountered turbulence in the latest episode, ultimately leading them to part ways. Now, Oliver Stark is expressing thoughts on what’s next for Buck, and I find myself feeling a mix of anticipation and apprehension regarding the situation.
In “Confessions,” it was unveiled that Tommy had been engaged to none other than Abby Clark, the former dispatcher, for a period of two years – a woman with whom Buck shared a significant bond in Season 1. Their relationship ran so deep that after their breakup, Buck continued to reside at her house. A sense of closure didn’t come until Abby unexpectedly reappeared in the Season 3 finale. After discussing matters with Maddie and Josh, Buck acknowledged his strong feelings for Tommy, even though their connection was somewhat uncomfortable. However, despite these sentiments, Tommy chose to end the relationship, fearing potential pain and due to it being a new experience for Buck.
It’s apparent that Oliver Stone’s character, Buck, will find the breakup challenging, as seen when he appeared at Eddie’s at the end of the episode without saying a word. All that was shared were beers and silence. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Stark hinted at how his character might cope with the split, suggesting it could result in a meaningful moment, but there’s still cause for concern.
Buck intends to redirect his grief into constructive pastimes, showing an almost fanatical devotion, which some people around him notice and provides amusing, light-hearted moments for the cast. In true Buck style, he will continue to press on and find a way to deal with this situation. Initially, he will put up a brave front, giving the impression of ‘I’m fine,’ but over time, signs of his struggles may become visible.
One way to rephrase the given text in a natural and easy-to-read manner would be: It’s exciting to think about Buck expressing his feelings through new activities, as it will provide some enjoyable scenes involving other characters too. Moreover, fans are eagerly anticipating some humor as we embark on this new season, considering its start.
Although he may try numerous methods to avoid it, eventually he will reach his breaking point due to the intense emotions he is experiencing. Buck has been in other relationships before, but this is his first with a man, and the unexpected nature of the breakup might be the reason why he’s taking it particularly hard. Even though the 118 are there to help him, they have their limits, so we may see some sort of emotional breakdown occurring.
In future episodes, there’s a chance for the show 9-1-1 to delve deeper into Buck’s personal journey regarding his sexuality. Since he quickly entered a relationship after openly expressing himself in that significant kiss scene, this newfound single status might allow him to better understand and explore who he is. I’m excited to witness some humorous situations arising from his interests, but considering Oliver Stark’s remarks about potential struggles, I can’t help but feel concerned about the possibility of him facing difficult times ahead.
9-1-1’s latest episodes are broadcast every Thursday at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on ABC. If you miss it, don’t worry! You can catch up by streaming it the next day if you have a Hulu subscription.
