As I delve into the fascinating tale of Tom Cruise’s early career, I find myself utterly captivated by the intricate dance of fate that guided this enigmatic figure to stardom. It seems as though every step he took was carefully orchestrated by some unseen force, ensuring that he would become the ultimate movie star of his generation.
Immediately following Tom Cruise’s graduation from high school in 1980, he chose to depart from Glen Ridge, New Jersey, the place where he had spent his adolescent years. His destination was New York City, where he aimed to kickstart an acting career. Just a few months later, this aspiring actor, who had only acted once before in a high-school production of the musical “Guys and Dolls”, managed to secure his first role on screen. This breakthrough occurred in the 1981 romantic drama film titled “Endless Love”.
Initially thought to play the lead character David in the movie “Endless Love,” a story adapted from Scott Spencer’s renowned novel, Tom Cruise ultimately lost the role to another unknown actor named Martin Hewitt. However, this loss proved to be a lucky break for Cruise, as his career took off in the early 1980s due to a series of fortunate events.
Remarkably, Tom Cruise’s screen acting debut in Endless Love marked the beginning of one of the swiftest climbs to stardom ever witnessed, leading to his undeniable status as a lasting and iconic figure in Hollywood over the past four decades. He is now 62 years old.
Tom Cruise Has a Small but Pivotal Role in Endless Love
Scott Spencer’s impactful 1979 novel “Endless Love” revolves around an intense tale of unyielding affection, narrated from David’s perspective as he reminisces, with a mix of longing and fury, about the significant love of his life, Jade. This passionate adolescent romance met its demise more than a decade ago due to adult constraints and unfortunate events. Conversely, the 1981 film version, helmed by Franco Zeffirelli, unfolds in a sequential manner, portraying the story as a typical teenage romantic drama where David and Jade’s relationship is mainly undone by Jade’s father.
In the movie, David, first welcomed into the free-spirited home of Jade, later faces the displeasure of Jade’s father, leading to a prohibition that keeps Martin Hewitt’s character, David, from interacting with Brooke Shields’ character, Jade, for at least a month. This restriction is intolerable to David, who desperately seeks ways to rekindle his relationship with Jade, but she starts distancing herself from him in their school environment.
Tom Cruise plays Billy, a boy who unintentionally became a hero when he accidentally set fire to a pile of newspapers and then put it out. This story affects David so much that he decides to imitate Billy’s actions by setting fire to Jade’s house with the intention of being seen as a hero by Jade’s father. However, his plan backfires and he ends up getting convicted for arson and admitted into a mental hospital.
The brief, solitary scene of Cruise around the midpoint of the movie, lasting roughly 45 seconds, acts as a trigger for all subsequent events in the film.
Endless Love Is a Failed Adaptation of a Great Novel
In many cases, movie adaptations that fall short, such as Endless Love, stick too rigidly to insignificant details of their original source (the 1979 novel), while distorting its key strengths. For instance, in the film, Tom Cruise’s character, Billy, indirectly motivates David to burn down his girlfriend Jade’s house, whereas in the book, the fire is portrayed as an expression of David’s sorrow and ardor. Furthermore, while the fire serves as a potent opening scene in the novel, it appears much later in the movie, creating a narrative flow that is illogical and structurally confusing.
Despite earning over $30 million at the domestic box office, the film “Endless Love” faced criticism due to its mismanagement of the original material. As a result, many critics referred to it as an unfortunate adaptation. Interestingly, aside from being Tom Cruise’s first screen role, this movie is also widely recognized for its iconic theme song titled “Endless Love,” which was sung by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie. The song climbed to the top of the charts and even earned a nomination for Best Original Song at the Academy Awards.
Fate Guided Cruise’s Rise to Stardom
Tom Cruise’s reputation as the premier movie star of his era is partly due to his unique focus on feature films instead of television acting, a choice not borne out of intention but rather circumstance. In 1982, Cruise even auditioned for the lead role in the NBC series “The Powers of Matthew Star,” but the part ultimately went to Peter Barton.
If Tom Cruise had been cast in The Powers of Matthew Star, a short-lived series infamously known as one of the worst shows of its time, it could have significantly postponed or even halted his dream of starring in films. Looking back, this rejection seems to have been fortunate for Cruise, who, with his evident determination and skill, has consistently found himself at the right place and time throughout his career.
