Smallville’s Tom Welling Shared The Super Story Behind Christopher Reeve Coming To The Set

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant worlds of DC Comics, I can honestly say that the moment when Tom Welling shared the screen with Christopher Reeve on Smallville was nothing short of magical. The nostalgia it stirred within me was as potent as any virtual reality experience.

As for the forthcoming DC films, a fresh take on Superman will be introduced next summer by David Corenswet. In the interim, isn’t it intriguing to reminisce about the legendary portrayals of Superman throughout the years? Tom Welling, who embodied the character across ten seasons of Smallville, recently recounted his encounter with the initial big-screen Superman, Christopher Reeve, when the actor dropped by The CW series.

In 2003, when Tom Welling was 25 years old, he had the opportunity to act alongside Christopher Reeve on an episode of ‘Smallville’. Remarkably, Reeve was 50 at that time. During a recent appearance at Comic Con Stockholm (as reported by Screen Rant), Welling shared his experience of learning about working with another Superman actor during the show’s second season.

Three days beforehand, I found out about the shoot. We only receive scripts every ten days, and by the time we get them, we’re already preparing to film just three days later. It was Greg again, the same guy, who came to set and asked me what my plans were for the weekend. I was puzzled and asked him what he meant. He informed me that on Friday, we would be filming in the morning, flying to New York, shooting all day Saturday and Sunday, and then returning. At first, I didn’t want to go, but then he mentioned that we had Chris for three hours on Saturday, which was a compelling reason to attend.

The actor discovered only a few days prior that he’d be collaborating with the iconic Christopher Reeve, who embodied the spirit of Superman both on and off screen, during their work together. In his own words, here’s what transpired:

Initially, we departed, and the following day, Chris prolonged his stay – he was only meant to be on set for three hours, but I believe he stayed an additional six or seven, as his nurse, who held Power of Attorney over him, insisted due to his eagerness not to leave. Originally, we planned to film only his scenes, and then he would depart, allowing me to work with someone else and film my own scenes. However, Chris expressed a desire to remain, which led to us working together longer than anticipated. When I refused to leave with her, she threatened to call the police, but Chris, in a moment of defiance, replied that people often tell him what to do. He eventually had to depart, but he clearly enjoyed his extended stay and we shared many enjoyable moments.

Smallville’s Tom Welling Shared The Super Story Behind Christopher Reeve Coming To The Set

Title character Tom Welling from Smallville discusses the most crucial event for a spinoff series that he finds surprising hasn’t occurred yet.

Although Christopher Reeve soared in four “Superman” films spanning 1978 to 1987, tragedy struck in 1995 when he fell from a horse during an equestrian competition in Virginia. This unfortunate accident left him unable to move from the neck down. Consequently, Reeve made only a handful of acting appearances afterward, with “Smallville” being one of them.

According to Welling’s recollection, he was initially meant to spend just a few hours on set, but the actor was having such a great time that he ended up staying for twice as long.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: During the filming of “Smallville” Season 2’s episode “Rosetta”, I remember the actress had to intervene and warn she’d call the cops if the actor didn’t vacate the set. It seems Chris Reeve was having a ball being back as Superman!

In this installment, Reeve portrayed Dr. Virgil Swann, a genius and affluent scientist, who stumbled upon a transmission from Krypton and subsequently discovered Clark Kent as a representative of the extraterrestrial species. This particular episode holds significance within the series narrative, as it was through Swann that Clark found out his home planet had been destroyed.

In addition, Reeve made another appearance in the third season episode entitled “Legacy”, which was broadcast six months before the actor’s unfortunate passing in 2004.

As a gamer, I can’t help but share my awe after watching Tom Welling’s heartfelt tale about meeting Christopher Reeve. This extraordinary story unfolds in the latest documentary, “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” which undeniably ranks among the top films of this year for me. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can purchase it digitally now and prepare to be inspired.
