As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for true crime narratives and a keen interest in storytelling, I find myself intrigued by the unfolding events surrounding Hulu’s Amanda Knox series. Having binged my fair share of true crime documentaries and fictional adaptations, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions upon learning about the backlash from Perugia residents and Kercher’s family.
Filming for Hulu’s Amanda Knox series in Perugia, the city where Meredith Kercher was tragically murdered 17 years ago, has sparked criticism and opposition among locals since it began near the crime scene.
People put up signs saying “Respect for Meredith” all over the city, as the team behind the show “Blue Moon“, which Knox is an executive producer of, came in to start filming.
The eight-episode series, featuring Grace Van Patten (“Tell Me Lies”), is set to premiere on Disney’s streaming platform and follows Knox’s struggle to prove her innocence after being found guilty of a 21-year-old’s murder in 2007.
Following significant errors in the initial investigation, Amanda Knox and her Italian former partner Raffaele Sollecito were freed from prison in 2011 and ultimately cleared by Italy’s Supreme Court in 2015. Since then, Knox has taken up activism, journalism, and written a memoir titled “Waiting to Be Heard“. Rudy Guede, however, was eventually convicted for Kercher’s murder and given a sentence of 16 years in prison.
Currently 37 years old, Knox is facing renewed criticism from locals, as evidenced by Perugia’s mayor writing an apology letter to citizens for allowing filming to occur. Vittoria Ferdinandi expressed her belief that granting permission for the production would give the Italians control over the scenes being filmed.
As a fan of our charming town, I’d say, ‘Had it been up to me, I wouldn’t have given the green light for filming five scenes in Perugia. But with our region boasting similar charm, these scenes could easily have been shot elsewhere. However, granting permission offered us a sense of greater assurance and control. As we stipulated, this allowed us to review and approve each scene before it was filmed right here in Perugia.’
Just a week ago, Stephanie Kercher, my dear sister, expressed her family’s struggle in comprehending the purpose of the Knox series. Regrettably, Hulu’s representatives haven’t yet responded to The Hollywood Reporter’s queries regarding this matter.
