Squid Game Creator Almost Didn't Return For Season 2 After Literally Losing 8 Or 9 Teeth In The First Round

As a gamer who’s been through countless virtual worlds and battles, I can surely say that the real-life drama unfolding behind the scenes of Squid Game is as captivating as any game I’ve ever played. Three years have passed since this South Korean thriller took over our screens, and it’s finally returning for a second season in December 2024.

Three years have passed since the South Korean thriller “Squid Game” captivated audiences and claimed the title of Netflix’s most-watched series. The show revolves around a group of 456 individuals who compete in deadly versions of childhood games, with the ultimate goal of winning a substantial cash prize that could transform their lives. In its first month alone, it accumulated nearly 2 billion viewing hours. Although Season 2 is set to air in December as per the 2024 TV schedule, the creator initially had second thoughts about returning.

Although whispers circulated about a second season following the show’s debut, Netflix took almost a year to confirm Season 2 in summer 2022. One might expect a show of such scale to be renewed promptly, but here’s an explanation for the delay. The mastermind behind the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk, revealed to The BBC that he suffered dental loss – around eight or nine teeth – during the first season, causing him initial reluctance to continue. However, there was one factor that ultimately persuaded him to come back:

Although the initial series achieved tremendous global acclaim, it didn’t result in significant earnings for me. Consequently, working on the second series not only provides a means to recoup from the success of the first, but also allows me to complete the unfinished narrative.

Continuing Squid Game for another season would have undeniably left many tales untold, as creator Hwang Dong-hyuk admitted he didn’t fully conclude the story. Given the immense success of the first season and the financial windfall that followed, it’s understandable why he might agree to it. However, it’s hard to imagine that making this potentially risky show was an easy choice, even with the lucrative rewards. Creating more Squid Game certainly offers a significant monetary advantage.

It’s clear that the success of the show extends beyond its first season, given that creator Hwang Dong-hyuk spent a decade bringing it to life. Despite the hardships he faced, including financial struggles, it was all worth it in the end. Netflix recognized the potential gold mine they had on their hands, especially considering the numerous records broken. Though we’ve waited three years since the premiere, Season 2 is almost upon us at last.

Not only is Season 2 about to air, but we can also expect Season 3 to follow closely behind it. In fact, Season 3 is scheduled for release in 2025, marking the end of this popular series. Although some elements of the final season may be introduced in Season 2, fans will have to stay tuned to find out exactly what’s in store.

In Season 2 of the popular series “Squid Game“, set to premiere on December 26, fans can expect the return of stars like Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-joon, and Gong Yoo. Alongside these familiar faces will be some fresh additions. If you’re a Netflix subscriber, make sure to get ready because this season promises to be one you won’t want to skip!
