Paul Mescal to Star in ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ in New York and London

As a long-time admirer of captivating performances and timeless stories, I’m absolutely thrilled to witness Paul Mescal’s American stage debut in Tennessee Williams’ iconic masterpiece, “A Streetcar Named Desire.” Having made a name for himself with critically acclaimed roles in “Normal People,” “The Lost Daughter,” “Aftersun,” and “All of Us Strangers,” I’m eager to see him bring Stanley Kowalski to life once more, alongside the equally talented Anjana Vasan and Patsy Ferren.

Paul Mescal will make his American stage debut this coming spring.

After his captivating performance in “Gladiator II”, actor Mescal is set to return to his role in Rebecca Frecknall’s stage reimagining of Tennessee Williams’s masterpiece, “A Streetcar Named Desire“. This revival will take place at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Off-Broadway, with showings from February 28th to April 6th.

After a stop in New York, the play will return to London’s West End for a limited run at the Noël Coward Theater from February 3 to February 22. Frecknall’s production of the play initially premiered at London’s Almeida Theater in 2022 and subsequently moved to the West End in 2023. Notably, the director is also currently associated with a revival of Cabaret on Broadway.

The story unfolds around Blanche DuBois, once a graceful lady from the South, who’s faced numerous hardships, as she relocates to New Orleans to stay with her sister Stella and brother-in-law Stanley, in an apartment they share.

In this upcoming stage adaptation, actor Tom Mescal, known for embodying Stanley Kowalski, a character originally played by Marlon Brando in the 1947 Broadway debut and 1951 film, will share the limelight with Anjana Vasan (renowned from “We Are Lady Parts”) as Stella Kowalski and Patsy Ferren (previously seen in “Pygmalion”) as Blanche DuBois. Notably, Mescal and Vasan previously worked together in London, winning Olivier Awards for their performances, and the production itself was honored with the Olivier Award for Best Revival.

The revival was also a hot ticket in the West End, with a reviewer for THR saying: “Young talent is bursting from the seams of this latest London revival of A Streetcar Named Desire. The result is a clear-eyed, vital, visceral production — sexy at times, but with a sort of primal danger running through it.”

After his significant role alongside Denzel Washington in the upcoming film “Gladiator II”, Mescal is back on set. He gained popularity with his performance in the 2020 series “Normal People”, and has also made a strong impression in films like “The Lost Daughter”, “Aftersun” and “All of Us Strangers”.

A Streetcar Named Desire is being brought to you by ATG Productions and Almeida Theatre. The creative team behind the production consists of Madeleine Girling for scenic design, Lee Curran for lighting design, Peter Rice for sound design, Merle Hensel for costume design, and Angus MacRae for composition.
