Kevin Costner Reacts to John Dutton’s ‘Yellowstone’ Premiere Fate

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the digital landscapes of various video games, I can certainly relate to Kevin Costner‘s character John Dutton in Yellowstone – we both have a knack for finding ourselves in the thick of things, navigating complex narratives and making tough decisions.

Kevin Costner shares his thoughts on the possibility of John Dutton’s death at the start of Yellowstone‘s comeback.

Previously acclaimed lead actor of a popular drama series airing on Paramount Network appeared as a guest on The Michael Smerconish Program, broadcasted by SiriusXM. During the interview, he was queried about his response to the showrunner Taylor Sheridan concluding the Dutton family’s patriarch character.

In the video below, Costner expressed his reluctance to watch the movie due to rumors of its tragic plot, stating, “That doesn’t make me eager to go check it out.” Smerconish noted that Costner’s character didn’t seem like someone who would commit suicide, to which Costner responded, “They’re quite intelligent individuals. Perhaps it’s a misdirection. We’ll see. They’re skilled at their craft and will likely unravel the mystery.

As the story unfolds midway through the show, it’s disclosed that Dutton’s demise wasn’t a genuine suicide but a well-orchestrated murder. The culprit behind this heinous act was none other than Jamie’s girlfriend Sarah, who had secretly hired an assassin to carry out the deed.

Hey there! Let me tell you a funny thing that happened to me as a gamer. You know how sometimes you see ads for games you’re not even playing? Well, that’s been happening to me lately with my face everywhere! I thought, “Wow, this isn’t one I’m in.” I wasn’t aware that it was the release of a new episode last night. Honestly, I swear on everything, I had no idea until this morning when someone filled me in. It turns out, I missed the big event!

As a gamer, I’ve been fielding questions once more about my departure from the show, all tied up in the contract and scheduling disagreements with Paramount. To be honest, it boiled down to having to choose between the screen and the game world of my Horizon movie saga, and I opted for the latter. In response to your curiosity, I gave a comprehensive explanation.

He explained that he didn’t have to abandon anything since there were contractual arrangements that allowed both projects, ‘Yellowstone’ and ‘Horizon’, to be completed. However, due to the contractual nature of these projects, he had to make space for one to accommodate the other. There was room, but it was challenging for ‘Yellowstone’ to maintain their schedule. It turned out to be too difficult for them to proceed, so adjustments were made. I didn’t leave the show or quit; I had a contract for all three remaining seasons. During an eight-month period, two more contracts were being negotiated, not at my request but theirs, to facilitate these changes. I complied with these additional changes and eventually when they wanted to change things again. However, because of my commitments, I couldn’t assist them any longer… Everyone needs to honor their commitments, regardless of the business they’re in.

Costner also dabbled in politics, showing support for Liz Cheney who faced criticism from conservatives for challenging Donald Trump and backing Kamala Harris. “I’m extremely proud of Liz Cheney,” he stated. “I found someone who stands firm against one side and isn’t afraid to speak up. We should applaud her. We should safeguard her. She shouldn’t be threatened, and neither should anyone in America who takes a stand for principles we respect. The individuals who stood up during the Revolutionary War deserve our admiration, and so does anyone standing up today. When someone takes a stand, even if we don’t agree, we can’t let them face danger. As a man, I won’t allow it. We shouldn’t permit that.” (paraphrased)

On Sundays, you can catch “Yellowstone” on Paramount Network. After its premiere, check out an interview with director Christina Voros from The Hollywood Reporter about how they approached Kevin Costner’s character and his destiny in the show.
