As a lifelong cinema enthusiast with a soft spot for Gotham-based stories, I must say that the news of a potential second season of “The Penguin” has me absolutely ecstatic! The first season was a masterclass in dark, gritty storytelling, and the performances by Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti were nothing short of stellar.
Initially, “The Penguin” was intended as a limited series. However, much like other productions associated with Gotham and television in general, there could potentially be more content despite initial statements. So if you’re eager for more of the critically praised misdeeds by Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti, prepare yourself, as additional episodes might soon grace your television screens.
In an exclusive chat with Entertainment Weekly, The Batman director Matt Reeves and The Penguin’s showrunner Lauren LeFranc shared insights on how the series sets up for The Batman II and hinted at some intriguing discussions about a potential second season of The Penguin.
Will The Penguin Get A Season 2?
Are we going to get more of The Penguin? Short answer? Probably!
Translation: The series, based on comic books, has garnered an audience similar to other popular shows like ‘The Last of Us’ and ‘House of the Dragon’, as stated in their November earnings call by Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO. From the start, they were hoping for more of it, and the critical praise for Michael C. Hall and Cristin Milioti’s performances has only increased this desire since its debut.
Nonetheless, Reeves has begun discussions with EW regarding potential plans for a second season. He, Lauren, Dylan, and Colin are casually discussing the possibility, setting the stage for what could be next. For me, it’s crucial that if we decide to return, we maintain the same high standard. Revisiting should mean keeping that bar at the same level.
He clarified, “We all understand that returning to the same routine isn’t our desire; instead, we aspire for something exceptional. That’s what we’re discussing now. We believe there’s potential in it, but it’s still in its infancy. It’s intriguing, though – extremely rewarding.
“There’s an urgency,” on behalf of the studios, Reeves admitted, to getting more Penguin on-screen.
If you’re seeking specific deadlines, unfortunately, you’ll need to join the queue with the executives from HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery. As for when we can expect it, Reeves admitted he doesn’t have that information just yet. However, he did mention a sense of urgency.
Currently, the makers are satisfied with how The Penguin storyline is shaping up in relation to the upcoming Batman film by Reeves. After that, it remains a mystery as to how they will further develop Oz Cobb and Sofia Falcone. However, since Gotham is unpredictable, be prepared for anything new. For now, keep the bat signal glowing!
