Disney Debuts Taika Waititi-Directed Holiday Short

As a seasoned gamer and longtime Disney enthusiast with a soft spot for quirky narratives, I must say that “The Boy and The Octopus” has piqued my interest. The film, directed by the multi-talented Taika Waititi, seems to encapsulate a charming blend of adventure, friendship, and the magic of Disney – elements that have resonated with me over the years.

Disney recently debuted a fresh holiday short titled “The Boy and The Octopus“, helmed by Academy Award winner Taika Waititi, recognized for his work in films such as “Jojo Rabbit” and “The Hunt For the Wilderpeople“.

The four-minute video uploaded on YouTube yesterday tells the story of a young boy who meets a peculiar octopus during a seaside holiday while snorkeling. This tenacious marine invertebrate adheres to the boy’s head, becoming an unwavering companion throughout his journey.

At home, they take pleasure in a variety of items based on intellectual properties owned by Disney, such as a Buzz Lightyear action figure, a Star Wars Jedi’s light saber, and a Mickey Mouse beanie.

As they watched the classic Disney holiday movie, “The Santa Clause” (1994), they devise a clever scheme to secretly bring an octopus aboard Santa’s sleigh. This way, the octopus could journey across the globe, though it’s unclear how this marine creature would endure the freezing temperatures of the North Pole – maybe future Disney films will address that mystery. Meanwhile, the story unfolds accompanied by a fresh orchestral rendition of “Part of Your World,” from Disney’s beloved film, “The Little Mermaid” (1989).

Taika Waititi has been the director for multiple Disney films, such as “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017), “Thor: Love and Thunder” (2022), “Jojo Rabbit” (2019), and “Next Goal Wins” (2023) under Searchlight Pictures, a subsidiary of Disney. Additionally, he has served as an executive producer for the TV series “Reservation Dogs,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” and the upcoming limited series “Interior Chinatown” on Hulu.

I had the pleasure of collaborating with creative powerhouses like adam&eveDDB and Untold Studios, along with the skilled production team at Hungry Man, to bring this short film to life.
