As a lifelong Disney fan who’s seen my fair share of Pixar movies, I can say that the news about Cars 4 has me revving my engines! It’s been seven long years since we last saw Lightning McQueen on the big screen, and it seems like he’s not quite ready to hang up his racing wheels yet.
2021’s D23 Expo was supposed to feature the comeback of the frequent Piston Cup champion, Lightning McQueen, as Disney inadvertently disclosed that “Cars 4” had initially been scheduled for the event’s program. It has been seven years since the iconic “Kachow!” echoed through cinema speakers in “Cars 3”, and ever since, fans have been yearning for another installment of those beloved Disney-Pixar movies.
According to a poll conducted on the D23 website (as reported by @HollywoodHandle), it appears that Cars 4 could potentially be in production. The survey inquired about which project fans were most excited for at the Disney-focused event. It’s worth noting that Cars 4 was among the films mentioned. Although Disney and Pixar have not yet confirmed the existence of Cars 4, some viewers thought that Cars 3 marked the conclusion of the series. It is now anticipated that Disney will soon make an official announcement about the fourth installment in order to preempt any leaks regarding its development.
In the movie “Cars 3,” directed by Brian Fee, Lightning McQueen appears to retire from racing and instead trains a young protégé named Cruz Ramirez, realizing that his days as a professional racer may be numbered. Following the controversial “Cars 2,” the third film faced tough odds. Unfortunately, “Cars 3” flopped at the box office, leading many to believe that the franchise was nearing its end. However, with seven years to regroup and prepare, there’s a chance Lightning McQueen might not be ready to hang up his racing tires for good. If Disney announces “Cars 4” soon, it’s likely that McQueen will be gearing up for one last race before finally calling it quits, this time for good and truly.
Cars Is One of Disney’s Weirdest Franchises
As someone who’s always held a soft spot for automotive marvels, I can say that the concept of sentient cars forming their own society has long been a cherished dream among us car enthusiasts. The release of the first Cars movie by Disney was nothing short of a triumph, not only critically but also commercially. It introduced two unforgettable four-wheeled personalities to the realm of animation: the charismatic Lightning McQueen, voiced by Owen Wilson, and the lovable Tow Mater, brought to life by Larry the Cable Guy.
Initially, the plot of the second “Cars” movie seems rather incongruous within the trilogy. In “Cars,” we followed Lightning McQueen’s journey to regain his racing prowess and win the Piston Cup, while in “Cars 3,” he stepped aside for the new generation of racers. However, “Cars 2” presented an unusual scenario where McQueen and Mater joined a spy agency to expose an unscrupulous oil corporation that was eliminating cars when a novel eco-friendly fuel was introduced for an international racing circuit. The storyline in “Cars 2” seemed more fitting for a young enthusiast who had watched too many James Bond movies.
Additionally, a growing body of intriguing tales circulates about the universe of Cars. Ignoring the confusion over the car characters’ anatomy, particularly due to the blinking headlights in the initial film, the presence of a WWII Jeep implies that there was a World War in the Cars world. Did they have a Cars Hitler? And why are buses present if there are no people? Could some cars be compelled into roles based solely on their outward appearance? Although it may seem absurd, these are the types of questions that have captivated the internet since the first movie premiered in 2006.
