As a die-hard fan who’s been through the rollercoaster of anticipation and disappointment with many shows over the years, I can confidently say that 2025 is shaping up to be the year of unparalleled excitement for me. The announcement of specific release windows for Season 2 of “The Last of Us” and “Peacemaker” has sent a thrill through my veins like nothing else.
Max has shared the release timelines for upcoming seasons of “The Last of Us” and “Peacemaker”. Prior to the finale of “The Penguin”, viewers got a sneak peek into Max’s future plans towards the end of 2024 and in 2025. Titles such as “The Sex Lives of College Girls”, a new season of “White Lotus”, and the return of Nathan Fielder’s “The Rehearsal” were among those mentioned. However, it was the announcements for “The Last of Us” Season 2 and “Peacemaker” Season 2 that truly caught fans’ attention. While the trailers only hinted at their arrival in 2025, now each has a precise release window.
At a 2025 programming schedule unveiling (through IGN), HBO executive Casey Bloys disclosed the launch periods for Season 2 of The Last of Us and Peacemaker Season 2. Specifically, The Last of Us Season 2 is set to air in Spring 2025. On the other hand, Peacemaker Season 2 will make its debut on Max in August 2025, notably a month following James Gunn’s Superman film’s theater release. Unfortunately, neither series received an exact premiere date.
1) “The Last of Us” is a television show based on the well-known video game franchise by the same name. In it, Pedro Pascal plays Joel and Bella Ramsey plays Ellie. The series debuted in January 2023 to rave reviews from both audiences and critics, garnering 24 Primetime Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. “Peacemaker” is a spin-off of “The Suicide Squad,” with John Cena taking on the lead role. Originally part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), the show will transition into James Gunn’s new DCU with Season 2.
It’s Not TV, It’s HBO’s 2025 Programming Lineup
In simple terms, “The Last of Us” Season 2 is set to be based on the video game “The Last of Us Part II,” which was released in June 2020. The second season is expected to be shorter than the first to pave the way for a more extended third season that has already been approved. The cast for Season 2 includes Kaitlyn Dever, Young Mazino, Isabela Merced, Danny Ramirez, Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, Catherine O’Hara, and Jeffrey Wright, among others. It’s speculated, but not yet confirmed, that the second season could premiere in April, as HBO has historically had great success with series like “Game of Thrones,” which debuted most of its seasons during this month.
In a span of just one month after the cinematic release of Superman, Peacemaker Season 2 is set to premiere. Unlike Creature Commandos, which marks the beginning of James Gunn’s DCU, Superman is considered the true launchpad. Originally, a series focusing on Amanda Waller was planned for broadcast between Creature Commandos and Superman, but this series encountered production issues, causing Peacemaker Season 2 to be moved up in the schedule. In the upcoming projects, Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. is set to appear in Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker, which might suggest that Peacemaker’s narrative could address the repercussions of Superman’s events. Since Season 1 ended three years ago, it will be around the same time that Peacemaker makes its comeback in 2025. Alongside The Last of Us, Max will undoubtedly be a standout figure to watch out for next year.
