Deadpool & Wolverine Almost Revealed Deadpool Was Always in the MCU

As a lifelong Marvel fan who has seen more superhero movies than I care to admit, I can’t help but marvel (pun intended) at the near-miss of Deadpool & Wolverine becoming an integral part of the MCU’s history. The idea of Deadpool being a hidden presence in the previous films is nothing short of genius, a perfect blend of meta humor and intrigue that would have undoubtedly shaken up the status quo.

A fascinating twist was initially considered for the movie starring Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), which almost revolutionized the narrative of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This film, with its remarkable box office success, significantly boosted Marvel Studios’ reputation. Interestingly, an early concept for this film proposed that Deadpool would play a crucial role in shattering the established MCU norms, offering a humorous deviation from the usual superhero narrative.

The DVD version of Deadpool & Wolverine comes with extra content, such as a peek into the movie’s production backstage. Initially, plans for the sequel to Deadpool involved a segment called the “Deleted Scene Extravaganza,” which would have disclosed that the anti-hero had been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe all along. Producer Wendy Jacobson mentioned this, stating that due to some deleted scenes, Deadpool was actually present in earlier films, but we didn’t notice because his scenes ended up on the editing room floor. In other words, he was there, but you simply didn’t see his parts in the MCU movies.

Surely, it’s common knowledge now that Deadpool ultimately didn’t make the cut with the Avengers and stayed in his designated timeline within the Marvel Cinematic Universe multiverse. Yet, a pairing of Deadpool and Wolverine could have been quite daring, potentially disrupting the established order of the MCU through the clever twist. In Deadpool’s universe, this seems like a humorous jab that fits his character perfectly, and it wouldn’t necessarily impact other MCU stories. Ultimately, the decision keeps things simpler and more consistent with the events already set in the franchise.

Given the strong connection Deadpool and Wolverine have formed with their fans, it’s surprising to think Marvel Studios might not be planning a follow-up of some sort. The trio behind the scenes – Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and director Shawn Levy – enjoy working together so much that they are already exploring a non-superhero project. Kevin Feige even hinted at D23 Brazil that he’s open to finding ways to bring these characters back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Despite not having announced a sequel yet, it appears the MCU will find intriguing ways to involve Deadpool in new and exhilarating stories.

The movie didn’t do much to integrate the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), meaning that Deadpool and Wolverine are currently the primary mutant characters in the series until additional information is available. The popularity of Deadpool and Wolverine has led Kevin Feige to consider incorporating them into more upcoming Marvel projects. They could reappear in Avengers: Secret Wars, and it’s highly likely that there will be a Deadpool sequel or appearances by Deadpool in other films (or TV shows). Given his role, Deadpool was not initially part of the MCU, but he is now an essential piece of its future. Hugh Jackman has confirmed that he will continue as Wolverine, effectively ending any rumors about recasting the character.
