The Outer Banks Cast Said Their Final Goodbyes To A Beloved Character In A Heartwarming Video, And Fans Are Not Doing Okay

As a dedicated fan of Outer Banks, I can’t help but feel like I’ve been hit by a rogue wave after learning that JJ is not coming back for Season 5. This show has been my summer escape since its debut, and losing such a beloved character feels like losing a friend. It’s like they took the Pogues’ compass away and left us adrift in the Atlantic!

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Outer Banks Season 4, Volume 2!

In the series ‘Outer Banks’, major characters often cheat death. John B., more than any one person, has evaded numerous fatal encounters. Sarah, who was shot, miraculously returned from the brink of death. As for Ward Cameron, he faked his own death in earlier seasons and met his end in ‘OBX’ Season 3. Given the show’s pattern, it’s no surprise that fans have been speculating about how Season 5 might bring JJ back to life after his demise at the end of Season 4, Volume 2. However, alas, these creative ideas seem as if they too have met their end.

Following the publication of a farewell video by the official Outer Banks social media account, featuring cast members and actor Rudy Pankow (JJ) expressing heartfelt sentiments about their characters, fans found themselves overwhelmed with emotion, pouring out their feelings in the comment section.

If you haven’t seen it yet, grab some tissues before pressing play:

The video serves as an emotional farewell for Pankow, implying he won’t be reprising his role in the confirmed fifth and last season of the series. However, it’s heartbreaking news for fans who had been eagerly awaiting a solution from the creators that would miraculously revive JJ.

I think @bellsinfinite sums up what all of us OBX fans are thinking by tweeting:

This is the final nail in the coffin actually … jj maybank really isn’t coming back

Not all reactions to the video were as tactful as that. Some devoted followers of the series chose to channel their sorrow into rage, posting comments such as:

  • this is going to go down as one of the worst decisions a show has ever made im crying – @DayaxxDaya
  • i will never forgive this show for making me care about this character only to make me lose him i wish i could go back and time and punch myself in the face to stop myself from watching it – @girlssyourage
  • BRING HIM BACK IDC HOW JUST BRING HIM BACK ASAP OR CANCELL S5 – @bellyjeremiahh

Fans over on Instagram were a little nicer. Instead of shouting at the show for the questionable plot twist, they voiced their grief more softly. While they blamed the series for all the tears they’ve cried, they also praised Pankow and his portrayal of JJ:

  • Rudy thank you for such an amazing character. jj changed my life for the better. He lit up my world when it was the darkest and has helped me through incredibly difficult times. For that Rudy I will forever be greatful ❤️🫶 – @nqva_galaxy
  • i’m not crying, you are 😭😭😭 – @clinesobx
  • jj was truly one of my absolute favorite comfort characters. i still cannot believe that hes gone and never coming back. he will live on forever:( 🤍🤍 – @maddiecole_04

In a television landscape where main characters often escape unscathed, the departure of JJ (and by extension, Pankow) has left fans stunned. This isn’t just a disappointment for viewers, but also a significant blow to the show, as JJ was half of a beloved pairing and the emotional core of the Pogues.

The void left by him will certainly be profound during the fifth and concluding season. Yet, I must admit, there’s a sense of anticipation within me about how his demise might impact the remaining Pogues, as they stand at a crossroads with critical decisions looming before the series comes to its final end.

Currently, enthusiasts yearning to re-experience the charm of Outer Banks and humorous lines from JJ can stream all four seasons on Netflix with a subscription – though, it might be best to avoid watching Season 4, Episode 10 if you’re not in the mood for another round of tears.
