Kevin Spacey Continues Controversial Comeback With First Trailer for The Contract

As a seasoned film critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that I approach every new movie release with a discerning eye and a heart full of anticipation. However, when it comes to Kevin Spacey‘s latest offering, “The Contract,” I find myself grappling with a peculiar mix of intrigue and trepidation.

Actor under scrutiny, Kevin Spacey, is making his return to the big screen with the unveiling of the first trailer for the upcoming suspenseful drama titled “The Contract“. Here, Spacey assumes the role of “The Devil”, a name that may be a tad literal. The movie will premiere at the Cairo Film Festival in the coming days, according to Variety. This intriguing psychological thriller revolves around a journalist who stumbles upon a scoop that leads him into an encounter with none other than Kevin Spacey’s character – a chilling depiction of the Devil. Despite its low-budget appearance, it promises to be an engaging watch.

This thriller is helmed by Italian director Massimo Paolucci (known for “All in One Day” and “Photoshock”), with a concept originating from Caroletti. The script was penned by his wife, Eva Henger. It’s a production of Tm Entertainment and Sandro Lazzerini. In the main roles, you’ll find an actor who also starred in this year’s “The Contract,” rated 2.8 on IMDb. Co-starring are Kevin Spacey, Vincent Spano, and Jennifer Caroletti.

The plot summary indicates that Roberts portrays a struggling, self-centered journalist named Giuseppe. He’s desperate to secure a big story to reignite his career. In his quest for this story, Giuseppe encounters a character played by Spacey, who appears to assist him but ultimately reveals that he has been manipulated by this character all along.

Kevin Spacey Is Now Slowly Returning to the Spotlight

When Kevin Spacey is portraying The Devil in “The Contract,” don’t anticipate him transforming into a red, horned figure like traditional depictions. Instead, his devilish character resembles Al Pacino’s role in “The Devil’s Advocate” (1997), where he played the Devil disguised as a powerful lawyer, tempting Keanu Reeves’ character to sin. The trailer for “The Contract” even subtly references Spacey’s recent controversies, with his character stating, “I don’t care about the past, it’s all long gone!” Therefore, be prepared for more of that as Spacey delivers a performance that seems intentionally over-the-top, amidst shaky camera work.

Since the year 2018, Kevin Spacey’s career has experienced a significant slowdown following a series of allegations regarding sexual misconduct that surfaced. These accusations started when Anthony Rapp, an actor from Star Trek: Discovery, claimed that Spacey had made inappropriate advances towards him in the 1980s, with Rapp being a minor at the time. Although Spacey was under investigation for criminal charges related to these allegations, he was either not indicted or those indictments were dismissed. Subsequently, Rapp filed a lawsuit against Spacey, accusing him of sexual assault, battery, and causing emotional distress. However, Spacey was found not guilty on all charges in the lawsuit.

I’m genuinely thrilled to see Kevin Spacey making a gradual return to the limelight. Recently, he won the Best Thriller Performance at the Folkestone Independent Film Awards for his chilling performance in last year’s film Control, where his character remains unseen. Earlier this year, he showcased his talent as an assassin in the neo-noir thriller Peter Five Eight. Upcoming projects include collaborations with DJ Qualls in Deadlock and portraying Gore Vidal in the biographical drama, Gore. I’m eager to witness his continued resurgence in the world of cinema.
