Lacey Chabert’s Hot Frosty Brings Some Much-Needed ‘Cheeky, Wanton Lust,’ Critics Say, As The Spicy Holiday Film Hits Netflix

As a devoted fan of Lacey Chabert and all things Hallmark, I’ve been eagerly awaiting her holiday movie releases every year. However, when I heard she was taking her Christmas talents to Netflix for “Hot Frosty,” I must admit, I was intrigued…and a tad skeptical.

Lacey Chabert has earned the title of queen at Hallmark with 40 TV movies under her belt, including one for this year’s Countdown to Christmas. Yet, “The Christmas Quest” isn’t her only holiday movie project in 2024. Some viewers were surprised when they learned that Chabert would be showcasing her Christmas skills on Netflix through the film “Hot Frosty“. It seems there might be a touch of heat involved in this production, and we may need to crack a window as it appears things could heat up a bit. The reviews for this project have been quite intriguing!

Before its release on November 13, some critics managed to preview the Netflix film titled “Hot Frosty”. With numerous holiday movie choices at hand, these critics aim to assist us in determining whether this comedy is worth putting on our must-watch list. Lacey Chabert plays Kathy, a widow who accidentally transforms a sculpted snowman into a living, and strikingly handsome man named Jack (portrayed by Dustin Milligan). In her review for Mashable, Kristy Puchko advises viewers to suspend their disbelief and let the alluring snowman provide a mental escape filled with absurdity and sugar-coated charm. According to Puchko’s write-up, this film offers an amusing and delightful experience.

In this tale, we meet Doctor Dottie, who, upon checking Jack’s temperature (an unusually warm 30 degrees!), proposes that Jack, a snowman brought to life, is the most straightforward explanation for his unusual condition: he’s a man who appears hot but feels ice-cold to the touch. The film presents this as a matter of science; it invites us to embrace the absurdity. And indeed, embracing the ridiculous concept at the heart of Hot Frosty – a warm, innocent, and delightful character who is the ideal Christmas dream for Kathy and anyone seeking comfort from the chilly world – brings a genuine sense of joy.

According to Courtney Howard from Variety, Lacey Chabert has swapped her traditional roles for more adult-themed ones this holiday season. Netflix seems to be catering to its viewers’ desire for a touch of playful, sensual content in this particular movie, which is a refreshing change from Chabert’s usual type of films.

Beneath the catchy title “Hot Frosty” is a heartwarming, endearing tale about overcoming tragedy. It’s also an irresistible, charming choice to watch when you need a break from reality. The emotional depth and Coldplay’s melodious background music create a delightful surprise package with a soul, making it an ideal secret Santa gift for those who appreciate a good escape.

William Bibbiani from The Wrap poses an unusual question, “Are you interested in a romantic rendezvous with a snowman?,” as the film Hot Frosty led him to recognize striking similarities between these traditional holiday rom-coms and adult entertainment. In essence, he suggests that they share qualities such as affordability, satisfying viewers’ tastes, and having an abundance of content that one could never manage to watch entirely throughout a single lifetime.

Hot Frosty might have been subpar and still managed to triumph with its ironic appeal. In truth, it’s quite shoddy and absurd, and some viewers might even dismiss it as terrible due to its humorous premise. However, it also possesses a self-aware charm, hinting at its intentionality and somehow managing to pull it off effectively. Chabert delivers her role effortlessly, as expected from her professional background. It’s Milligan who steals the show, though. He imbues this half-naked, sexy iceman with an innocent, wide-eyed quality that makes him endearing, and softens the delivery of even the most risqué jokes.

As a gamer, I’d put it like this: In Hot Frosty, the heat isn’t quite sizzling enough to make Grandma forget about her Christmas cookies in the oven. But everyone involved is well aware of the game we’re playing. Amy Nicholson from the New York Times made that clear.

The screenplay unabashedly borrows elements from Pretty Woman, It’s a Wonderful Life, and Edward Scissorhands, such as when Kathy’s cocktail-swilling friends are enchanted by the idea that a man this perfect must be magical. However, the intention is to be shameless. All those involved are well aware of the movie they’re producing, including Craig Robinson who delivers a humorous portrayal of the town sheriff, a character determined to apprehend Jack for public indecency (i.e., streaking).

As a devoted fan, I must admit that while Lacey Chabert’s Netflix romp has captured the hearts of many, it didn’t quite win me over in the same way. Brennan Klein from ScreenRant suggests that Netflix is using Lacey to showcase their unique content compared to Hallmark, but her character seems to lack the depth and novelty that I’ve come to expect from her work on cable networks. The movie received a 5 out of 10 rating from the critic, with Klein noting that it didn’t quite reach the heights I’d hoped for when it comes to Lacey Chabert’s performance.

As a devoted admirer, I must admit my disappointment with how Chabert’s performance isn’t pushed beyond her usual Hallmark style. She excels at evoking both emotional depth and cheerfulness within the boundaries of Hallmark productions, but the tight scheduling often restricts her to playing stock characters rather than complex ones. Take “Prickly With a Heart of Gold,” for instance, where she dips into the well-trodden Grieving Widow and Pillar of the Community roles. Though she delivers admirably, the overly saccharine character lacks the edge and substance that this movie desperately needs to stand out.

If you’re a fan of Lacey Chabert’s Hallmark films, it seems like “Hot Frosty” could be just the right spirited addition your holiday drink needs. You can now stream this movie with your active Netflix subscription.
