'The Penguin' Star Colin Farrell Reveals Deleted Scene Featuring Moniker

As a fan who has grown up with the dark and twisted world of Gotham City, I must say that the finale of The Penguin was nothing short of a masterpiece. Colin Farrell‘s portrayal of Oz Cobb was nothing less than spectacular, as he perfectly captured the essence of the iconic villain we all love to hate.

In a surprising twist, the final episode of The Penguin didn’t shy away from transforming Oz Cobb (played by Colin Farrell) into the notorious villain fans love to despise. It also showcased the character donning his classic comic book attire and top hat, but there was one crucial detail left out. Throughout the HBO series, it’s been established that Oz detests being called “The Penguin,” particularly by those in positions of power above him in the criminal underworld. Interestingly, a cut scene revealed that the character eventually accepts the villainous nickname from the comics.

In an interview with CinemaBlend, Farrell discussed the derogatory name “Penguin” given to his character by bullies. He explained that at the beginning of the series, it’s evident why Oz dislikes the obvious nickname. However, as his character transforms into a psychopathic, ruthless villain deserving of the title role, a scene was filmed where Oz accepts his new identity as Penguin. Farrell shared that there was a deleted scene in the season finale where Oz talks to a child who calls him “Penguin,” and instead of correcting the child, he acknowledges his public persona.

In the eighth episode, a child asks, “Aren’t you the Penguin?”, hinting towards his mother as well. Towards the end of the scene, I respond to him, implying that he should let his mother know that the Penguin looks after himself.

This aligns with the sequence of events following the tragic ending of “The Penguin.” Despite seemingly insurmountable odds, Oz manages to emerge victorious, as Sofia Falcone (played by Cristin Milioti) comes close to winning, only to be sent back to Arkham Asylum and leaving Oz in control of the criminal underworld. However, his new position brings about a change in circumstances; he’s now aiming to establish himself in the political landscape of Gotham City by going legitimate. In an unused scene, instead of reprimanding a child for using an offensive nickname, he accepts it with pride. Although Episode 8’s final cut does not feature this particular moment, it seems fitting as a conclusion to the storyline, albeit somewhat straightforward.

The Penguin Reaches His Final Form in the Finale

In the final episode of “The Penguin”, Oz Cobb manages to claim victory, but it’s a victory tainted by villainous actions that only Batman could seek retribution for. His mother, brilliantly played by Deirdre O’Connell, confesses she attempted to have him killed earlier, yet he defies her wish and, instead of letting her die peacefully from illness, leaves her in a coma. Furthermore, he takes the life of Vic (Rhenzy Feliz) with his own hands, eliminating any emotional connections that could hinder his rise in Gotham. Consequently, the power vacuum left by the Falcone family has birthed another vile creature in the form of Penguin, living up to his despicable moniker.

Given that the storyline from The Penguin seamlessly transitions into Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II, it’s unlikely that a second season will be forthcoming right away. HBO is negotiating with the show’s creators about renewing it, but any potential revival would occur post-2026, after The Batman sequel premieres in theaters. There’s a strong chance for a Sofia Falcone spinoff, considering the hints dropped about Selina Kyle (Catwoman) in the final episode. However, Oz Cobblepot will continue to be featured on the big screen, with his role seemingly limited to just “five or six scenes” in Part II.
