As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed the rapid evolution of media consumption over the past few decades, I must say that the 2024 election night was a game-changer, pun intended. The shift from traditional TV to YouTube for millions of Americans seeking election updates is not just a sign of the times, but a testament to the power of digital platforms in shaping our society.
2024’s Election Night ratings dropped significantly compared to 2020 on traditional television, however, recent findings indicate that approximately tens of millions of Americans continued to engage with the event… but this time primarily through YouTube.
On Thursday, YouTube, owned by Google, announced that over 45 million Americans tuned into election-related content on November 5th. This is a massive figure, and while not all viewers may have been watching live broadcasts during peak hours, it indicates that a significant number of people were nevertheless seeking election updates on YouTube.
To provide some context, approximately 42.29 million viewers were estimated to watch simultaneously across 18 different cable and television networks between 7 and 11 p.m. ET. Despite not being an identical comparison, the data from YouTube suggests a magnitude that can rival only the viewership of traditional TV.
In terms of the most-watched election livestreams, YouTube reported that a stream from Fox News garnered the largest audience, with over one million simultaneous viewers when Donald Trump spoke to his supporters that night. Fox was closely followed by streams from NBC News, another Fox stream called LiveNOW from Fox, and ABC News, all of which attracted substantial viewership.
Remarkably, a podcast moderated by well-known podcaster Patrick Bet-David was among the top five, emphasizing how effectively podcasters and content creators are making an impact in today’s media landscape.
Additionally, YouTube TV offers Fox News, MSNBC, CNN, and the major broadcast networks as well.
YouTube unveiled the top-watched election-related videos in the United States as the election approached, highlighting the significant impact and widespread reach of Joe Rogan.
The comedian and podcast host boasted the two most popular election-related videos on YouTube. Topping the list was his interview with Donald Trump, followed closely by his interview with Vice President-elect JD Vance. In third place was a compilation video of Trump working at McDonald’s created by Dylan Anderson, who specializes in sharing heartwarming tales through his videos.
As a fervent admirer, I’d like to share an intriguing tidbit: The cold open of Saturday Night Live featuring Vice President Kamala Harris was the fourth most-watched YouTube video related to the election, with the top five being completed by a video from Jubilee titled “Surrounded,” which features conservative podcast host Ben Shapiro surrounded by 25 voters supporting Harris.
Over the past four years, data shows a significant decrease in the impact of conventional media. However, the streaming figures from Fox, NBC, and ABC indicate that people are still interested in their content on non-traditional television platforms, such as online streaming services.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice the remarkable triumph of Bet-David’s PBD Podcast and Joe Rogan’s impressive performance. This phenomenon seems to hint at the rise of a new influential force, one that might be more dispersed, yet offers a fertile ground for powerful voices to resonate with a substantial audience.
Johnny Harris, Brian Tyler Cohen, Megyn Kelly, and Alex Cooper’s podcast “Call Her Daddy” drew a substantial audience in relation to election-themed content, all operating beyond the standard media environment.
