Tilda Swinton Says ‘The Room Next Door’ May Be “the Last Film I Make”

As a long-time admirer of Tilda Swinton‘s enigmatic and captivating performances, I must say her recent statements about potentially retiring from acting leave me both intrigued and saddened. Having graced our screens for over four decades with her unique talent, it is hard to imagine a cinematic landscape without the ethereal presence of this extraordinary actress.

Tilda Swinton may be ready to say goodbye to acting.

Actress Swinton recently chatted with Elle magazine, joined by her co-star Julianne Moore from “The Room Next Door.” In this discussion for Elle’s Women in Hollywood feature, they reflected on their career aspirations, decades after starting out in the 80s. Notably, Swinton shared an intriguing perspective during their chat.

She shared with the magazine that each movie she makes is intended to be her last. She didn’t want to jinx things because she’s enjoyed every moment from start to finish. She thought, “This could be a great one to end on. Maybe we should stop while we’re ahead.” And today, she feels that “The Room Next Door” will be the final film she makes. We’ll have to wait and see if anything else comes up.

Previously, Swinton stated that her goal was never to build a long-lasting acting career. In an interview with The Guardian in 2022, she disclosed that she originally planned to star in just a single movie.

She shared that she enjoys encountering characters for the first time in a movie. This aspect is what attracts her to documentaries. She’s more captivated by real people rather than actors. To spare viewers from the nuisance of repeatedly seeing an actor, she suggested that if you’re an actor, it’s best to do only one film – that way, they’ve seen you once, met you, found you intriguing, and won’t have to watch you again.

Pedro Almodóvar’s film “The Room Next Door” tells the story of Ingrid (Moore) and Martha (Swinton), who were once close friends when they worked together at a magazine. After many years apart, they reunite in an unusual yet surprisingly sweet circumstance.

The Oscar-winning actresses believe that the film remains significant today as it addresses issues such as life and mortality, aspects that are undeniably genuine parts of existence.

My friend passed away recently,” the Mary & George celebrity shared with Elle. “She’s around our age and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. This has left me in shock, as I find it hard to believe that such an event could occur so close to us. In fact, we had just finished making a movie about this very topic. So, I believe the film carries a sense of urgency and intrigue, as it resonates with our own experiences and serves as a reminder of our mortality. Martha, another cast member, has been incredibly resilient, stating, ‘Yes, it’s difficult, but I can handle it.’ This underscores an essential aspect of being human.

In her own words, the Marvel actress pointed out that the theme of this project revolves around power and the struggle against the inevitable realities of mortality and aging.

Swinton expressed that dealing with the sense of helplessness concerning mortality and aging can be considered a kind of unspoken rule, but she suggested that embracing this powerlessness is actually grace – it’s an essential part of life itself.

The Room Next Door is set to hit theaters Dec. 20.
