Donald Judd Foundation to Showcase Pierre Paulin’s Furniture Designs in New Exhibit

As a gamer with a deep-rooted passion for design and architecture, I find myself utterly captivated by the upcoming exhibition at The Donald Judd Foundation – “Pierre Paulin: Action House”. The sheer anticipation of witnessing six masterpieces from Pierre Paulin’s design archive is enough to set my heart racing like a level boss in my favorite game.

101 Spring St NYC is set to host a new exhibition by the Donald Judd Foundation, featuring six pieces chosen from the design archive of Pierre Paulin. This upcoming exhibit, titled “Pierre Paulin: Action House“, will showcase the French designer’s work related to a Herman Miller project that never came to fruition. The goal of this project was to revolutionize the way we think about domestic design systems.

In 1968, the ideas for the exhibition were realized as Paulin started developing a collection of early models. These models represented Herman Miller’s Action Office concept adapted for home furniture. The exhibition, jointly curated by Flavin Judd, artistic director of The Judd Foundation, and Paulin, is titled “Paulin, Paulin, Paulin.” It features the six original prototypes, labeled from zero to five, which roughly translate to models or sketches.

As a devoted admirer, I find that even after several decades, Paulin’s utopian design vision remains strikingly modern and forward-thinking. His designs, grounded in practical human needs, were crafted to offer customizable options, allowing each piece to transform into distinct configurations tailored to individual preferences, cultural contexts, available space, and even intuition.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve always been captivated by the timeless charm of the Dune seating system. Its organic design, featuring triangular upholstered panels, gives me a strong sense of connection with the ground – a testament to Paulin’s belief in the floor as a canvas for design. On the other hand, the smaller Tapis Siege, perched on an extended rectangular wooden platform, offers a perfect blend of function and style, acting as extra storage or display space when needed.

These advanced designs, along with their four companions, acquire a more approachable, human aspect due to their gracefully rounded forms, which subtly blend their industrial character.

The “Pierre Paulin: Action House” exhibition is set to commence for the general public on November 16, 2024, and will continue until February 15, 2025. It will be open from 1:00pm to 5:00pm only on Fridays and Saturdays.
