As a 90’s kid who grew up grooving to the smooth R&B beats of Boyz II Men, hearing about this biopic has me all fired up! I can only imagine the behind-the-scenes drama and camaraderie that went into creating those iconic hits like “Motownphilly” and “End of the Road.
The journey begins as we delve into the story behind the iconic R&B group Boyz II Men, whose music ruled the airwaves during the 1990s, through a biographical film focusing on their lives.
The team has joined forces with Compelling Pictures and Primary Wave to create a movie centered around a musical trio, which includes Nathan Morris, Shawn Stockman, and Wanyá Morris (Michael McCary, who departed in 2003 due to health problems, is not part of the group anymore). Discussions with prospective screenwriters and directors for the project have already started.
Boyz II Men, a musical group, was established in 1985. In the ’90s, they rose to prominence and became a significant force in music with popular songs like “Motownphilly,” “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday,” “End of the Road,” “I’ll Make Love to You,” and “On Bended Knee.” They also collaborated with Mariah Carey on her track “One Sweet Day.
The movie’s production team consists of Denis O’Sullivan and Jeff Kalligheri from Compelling, Larry Mestel from Primary Wave, Joe Mulvihill for the Mulvi Group, and Jeremy M. Rosen for Roxwell Films. Executive producers include Stockman, Nathan Morris, Wanyá Morris along with Ori Allon, Dennis Casali, and Steven Garcia.
Nathan Morris stated, ‘We’ve been eager to collaborate with the perfect teams that resonate with our tale and are ready to narrate it completely.’ He added, ‘On day one, Denis and Jeff from Compelling Pictures truly grasped who we were.’
The team at Compelling stated, ‘Growing up as ardent fans of Boyz II Men and forging friendships with them over the past few years, it’s a great privilege to be part of telling their exceptional, untold story on the big screen. We can’t wait to portray the bond and camaraderie, along with the hardships and triumphs, the laughter and heartache that have accompanied the unprecedented success these four gentlemen have earned through sheer dedication.’
Forthcoming projects from Compelling feature the film titled “The Collaboration“, starring Paul Bettany and Jeremy Pope.
Hollywood continues to favor music biopics after hit movies like Paramount’s “Bob Marley: One Love“. In the coming month, “A Complete Unknown” with Timothée Chalamet portraying Bob Dylan will be released in cinemas. There are also upcoming projects about the Beatles, Madonna, the Bee Gees, Queen Latifah and Sublime among others.
Variety was first to report about the Boyz II Men project.
