As a die-hard fan of Law & Order, I can’t help but feel like I have a sixth sense when it comes to predicting where things will go wrong – especially when Hudson University is involved! It seems like every time one of Dick Wolf’s shows sets foot on that fictional campus, chaos ensues.
Spoilers ahead for Episode 7 of Law & Order Season 24, called “Truth and Consequences.”
The first details about the next episode of Law & Order in 2024 have been unveiled, revealing that the team will tackle a murder within the family of a high-profile judge. Interestingly, Baxter takes charge when a witness balks at cooperation. A sneak peek even hinted at tension between Price and Maroun as they debated compelling a student to testify. However, it didn’t give away that Hudson University would be the focal point of the investigation. If I had known, I would have anticipated something catastrophic, given my experience with Law & Order and SVU, especially since Hudson University is notorious for causing trouble in Dick Wolf’s nine-show TV universe.
This week’s murder victim was a professor at Hudson University. The culprit, it turns out, was one of Hudson University’s students. A fellow student from Hudson University bravely testified, risking her own education and status in the U.S. Unfortunately, both Price and Baxter were left dissatisfied when Baxter faced pressure from the mayor to prevent the judge from taking the stand. It seems that Hudson University is a place where only bad things seem to occur.
To put it simply, while it may seem negative that Hudson, a fictional university, is often depicted as a hub of criminal activities, this doesn’t necessarily reflect negatively on the franchise itself. This is because fictional institutions can be used to portray crime scenarios without the real-world implications of involving a real college in New York City. However, Hudson has become so notorious for its criminal activities that it’s almost become a recurring joke in various shows, as nothing seemingly good ever happens there. In fact, even the showrunner of SVU, Warren Leight, acknowledged this trend by stating that an incident occurred at Hudson in a Season 21 episode. Similarly, I have written extensively about the negative reputation Hudson gained following a Season 23 episode of the Law & Order spinoff.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got some exciting news to share! You won’t believe it, but the place where they usually air SVU marathons – USA Network – recently ran an all-day event titled “Stay Away from Hudson University.” And guess what? They even created a special promo for it. Can’t wait to find out more about this!
It’s clear that “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: SVU” aren’t meant for laughter, but if you’re someone who would spend an entire day watching these series or marathon-watch with a Peacock subscription, there’s a good chance you’d find it amusing when NBC calls such a marathon by that name. (Did you know that Seth Rogen is well-versed in binge-watching “SVU”?) Moreover, the network didn’t just do it once; they’ve run this marathon on several occasions throughout the years.
To put it simply, while Hudson University appears frequently on SVU rather than the original Law & Order, a negative reputation was established for the university in Season 24 with the episode “Truth and Consequences.” This is one of my favorite episodes from the season so far. So, within the show’s universe, Hudson might be considered a less desirable place for characters in Dick Wolf’s New York City, but for those who don’t have to deal with this fictional NYC, I’m sure many people enjoyed the “Don’t Go To Hudson University” marathons!
Discover what’s coming up next in the events at Hudson University while you tune in to new episodes of Law & Order at 8 p.m. ET and Law & Order: SVU at 9 p.m. ET every Thursday on NBC. You can also watch both shows live on Peacock, or catch an SVU marathon on USA without much hassle!
