As a gamer who has spent countless hours navigating through the treacherous landscapes of “Doctor Who”, I must admit that the upcoming episode, “Joy to the World”, has me on edge. The return of an age-old adversary like Villengard is always a cause for concern, but when it’s an entire corporation with the potential to destroy Earth, well, that’s a whole new level of worry.
Approximately one year ago, Ncuti Gatwa’s portrayal as the Fifteenth Doctor made a remarkable entrance during the final special episodes of Doctor Who‘s 60th anniversary celebration. For those with a Disney+ subscription, he reappeared a few weeks later in the Christmas special titled “The Church on Ruby Road.” The time is soon here for another festive journey, as Gatwa teams up with Nicola Coughlan from Bridgerton in the upcoming episode “Joy to the World.” It has recently been disclosed that an age-old enemy of The Doctor will make an appearance in the next installment of Doctor Who, causing me even greater concern for Coughlan’s character.
Instead of the Fifteenth Doctor reuniting with Ruby Sunday after the finale of Disney+’s first season, the Time Lord character will team up with Joy, a woman portrayed by Coughlan, who checks into a hotel chain that, as per writer Steven Moffat, offers time travel to sell all the unsold nights in their hotels throughout history. A new clip titled “Joy to the World” hints that this hotel chain is connected to Villengard, the most prominent arms manufacturer across recorded history. Check it out here:
As The Doctor explained, Villengard – the name of the planet housing these weapon-manufacturing facilities – has been one of his longstanding adversaries. Viewers who’ve followed Doctor Who since its revival in 2005 have encountered this corporation frequently. The Ninth Doctor had destroyed those factories during a conversation with Jack Harkness in “The Doctor Dances,” and later, the Twelfth Doctor visited the planet’s ruins to meet with the Dalek called Rusty in “Twice Upon a Time.” Nevertheless, last season’s “Boom” episode featured Villengard more prominently than ever in Doctor Who, as it revolved around The Doctor accidentally triggering a landmine crafted by them, and the conflict was orchestrated by the company itself.
Regarding “Joy to the World”, it’s revealed that Villengard intends to create a star for limitless, adjustable energy. However, the potential danger lies in a star seed detonating on Earth at any point in history, which would incinerate all life. The Doctor adds that using these time-travel hotels during the star creation process could be risky since human history spans just a few thousand years and requires visiting one of those hotels 65 million years back. Interestingly, Villengard had anticipated this issue as The Doctor and Joy find themselves in a location established 65 million years ago, right before they are confronted by a T-rex.
As a passionate fan, I’ve got to say, The Doctor and Joy are undeniably going to find a way past that dinosaur’s dinner plans. However, the introduction of Villengard has me feeling uneasy about Nicola Coughlan’s character. It’s one thing to have a solitary villain or even a group of extraterrestrial beings, but an entire corporation bent on manufacturing weapons and potentially destroying Earth just to create a star energy source? That’s a whole new level of threat!
On December 25, 2024, “Joy to the World” is set to debut on TV schedules, followed by either Season 15 or Season 2 of “Doctor Who,” which is part of its Disney+ era, at some point in the following year. Fans of Nicola Coughlan from “Bridgerton” will need to be patient, as the fourth season isn’t expected until 2026.
