Jurassic World: Rebirth’s Director Just Discussed How The Film Will Return To The Franchise's Roots, And As An OG Fan, I’m Pumped

As a seasoned gamer and Jurassic Park enthusiast with decades of dinosaur-chasing adventures under my belt, I can confidently say that the upcoming Jurassic World: Rebirth has me more excited than a velociraptor on T-rex Tuesday! Gareth Edwards, the mastermind behind some of the most nerve-wracking blockbusters in recent memory, is back to breathe new life into the iconic franchise.

The Jurassic franchise has always been about more than just rampaging dinosaurs. It’s the awe, the danger and the fragile relationship between humanity and nature that make the films among some of the best science fiction movies of all time. Gareth Edwards, the director of the seventh installment in the series, the upcoming Jurassic World: Rebirth, is now aiming to return to the iconic film series’ roots and, as an OG fan, I’m pumped!

Upon learning that the mastermind behind Godzilla and The Creator was now directing the next Jurassic movie, my mind naturally wandered: could he manage to recapture the suspenseful essence that made Jurassic Park one of the top films from the ’90s? As it turns out, that’s exactly what he aims to do. In a chat with Empire, the director shared his strategy for revitalizing the franchise following the completion of Jurassic World 4. He also discussed how the upcoming movie will pay homage to Steven Spielberg’s original 1993 film.

It returns to the charm of the originals, overflowing with various thrilling scene types and exhilarating, enjoyable action sequences that offer plenty of room for creative expression and challenging viewers. Filmmaking presented numerous chances to indulge in amusement and engage in intriguing interactions with the audience.

This is music to my raptor-loving ears. If you’re anything like me, you’ve been yearning for a return to the suspense, discovery, and emotional weight that defined the OG Jurassic Park. Don’t get me wrong—the spectacle of Jurassic World was jaw-dropping, but that creeping sense of dread when the power goes out in the original park? That’s what truly gets the blood pumping.

The upcoming film, titled “Rebirth,” takes place five years following the end of “Jurassic World Dominion.” In this world, dinosaurs coexist freely, but due to changes in the ecosystem, many of these massive creatures are dying out. Director Gareth Edwards, working from a script by David Koepp, the original Jurassic Park writer, is reintroducing beloved dinosaurs while also presenting new characters – both human and prehistoric. Scarlett Johansson, who has long pursued a role in this franchise, will headline as Zora Bennett, a former military operative embarking on a high-risk mission to track down vital dinosaur DNA. Edwards hinted at Zora’s storyline:

She’s seeking purpose in her civilian life following her departure from the military… and an unexpected chance presents itself, which would essentially free her from ever needing to work again. However, during this process, she begins to grapple with the moral implications and boundaries of their actions.

Scarlett Johansson’s character appears ready to shoulder the emotional depth and storyline significance that previous characters from the Jurassic Universe have embodied. Unlike Steven Spielberg’s original, which primarily offered awe-inspiring dinosaur displays, it also crafted genuine, relatable characters who reacted authentically to the chaos surrounding them.

That’s what made the mix of humanity and prehistoric chaos so compelling. And let’s be real here: while the Jurassic World trilogy delivered plenty of popcorn-worthy moments, it didn’t quite stick the landing when it came to giving us characters as layered as Dr. Grant, Ellie Sattler or Ian Malcolm. If Rebirth is indeed going back to that storytelling sweet spot, we could be in for a major return to form.

As an OG fan, I couldn’t be more excited for a director with Gareth Edwards’ pedigree to guide the franchise forward. He’s proven he can balance large-scale spectacle with deeply personal stakes. (Rogue One, anyone?)

I’m looking forward to experiencing some heart-pounding action scenes, much like the T-rex escape or the raptors chasing Lex and Tim in the kitchen, in the upcoming film Jurassic World: Rebirth. You can catch it when it roars into cinemas and makes its debut on the 2025 movie schedule on July 2.
