As a cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of cinema, I must confess that the prospect of a third Sherlock Holmes film is a tantalizing one. The original duo, played by Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, brought a fresh, exhilarating take on the classic detective pairing, captivating audiences worldwide with their wit, chemistry, and action-packed adventures.
Jude Law recently shared a small, optimistic snippet about the progress of Sherlock Holmes 3, following Robert Downey Jr.’s successful return to roles like Iron Man and Tropic Thunder. In 2009, the original Sherlock Holmes was a blockbuster, earning $524 million globally and revitalizing the character for contemporary audiences. The sequel, A Game of Shadows from 2011, moved swiftly into production but fell short compared to its predecessor in both critical reception and financial success, despite raking in $543 million at the global box office. Discussions about Sherlock Holmes 3 have been ongoing for over a decade now.
Jude Law, known for portraying John Watson in both Sherlock Holmes films, recently shared a snippet of news about the upcoming third film. In an interview with The Playlist, he mentioned that a fresh draft of the script for Sherlock Holmes 3 has been written, but he himself hasn’t had a chance to read it yet. During the conversation, he hinted at a potential storyline involving time travel, which might resemble the short-lived cartoon series Sherlock Holmes in the 23rd Century. When asked about the time travel aspect, he simply expressed, “Oh, that’s intriguing. The concept has been changing over the course of nearly ten years now.” Later, he added:
There’s a strong desire to make this project happen, and we all share the determination to get it just right, to find the time, assemble the ideal team. What truly stood out for me from those films was the friendship I formed with Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan, they hold significant value for me. Hopefully, we’ll still move forward with it. I believe there’s a revised script waiting for me to read. The question then becomes, “How much will it cost? Can we make it happen?” [Laughs] But honestly, it’s not just the friendship, but also the experience of working alongside Robert, who brings an exceptionally intelligent, entertaining, driven, and inspiring energy to a film set. I miss being part of that vibrant atmosphere. It was a remarkable journey.
The idea for Sherlock Holmes 3 originated in 2011, prior to the release of A Game of Shadows. Since then, the movie has undergone multiple screenwriters, such as Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3), Justin Haythe (A Cure for Wellness), and Chris Brancato (Narcos), all of whom were involved in writing the script at different stages. In 2018, Warner Bros. initially set a release date for the film on December 25, 2020, later changing it to December 22, 2021. Dexter Fletcher (Rocketman) was appointed as the director for the third movie, but its release was postponed without a specific reason due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sherlock Holmes Stuck In Development Hell
Although the 2009 movie Sherlock Holmes enjoyed significant popularity, several factors have probably caused delays in making a third film. The primary factor has been the availability of star Robert Downey Jr., who was occupied with filming A Game of Shadows between Iron Man 2 and The Avengers. After that, his schedule became exceptionally packed due to his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe from 2012 to 2019, during which seven out of nine of his films were part of the MCU. His only other films during this period were a cameo in Chef and the lead role in The Judge. By the time Downey Jr.’s schedule had become free, he was wrapping up work on the controversial Dolittle movie, and then the COVID-19 pandemic halted production for that film. When Downey Jr. resumed work, it was for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, where he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
With Robert Downey Jr. reprising his role as Doctor Doom within the MCU, there’s speculation about when he might fit Sherlock Holmes 3 into his busy schedule. Another question is whether a new sequel would be worthwhile for Warner Bros, given the abundance of Sherlock Holmes content since the 2009 film. From television series like Sherlock and Elementary to CBS’ upcoming Watson starring Morris Chestnut, which debuts in 2025, there has been no dearth of Holmes-related material. It’s been 13 years since Downey Jr. and Jude Law portrayed Holmes and Watson on screen. Will viewers still be eager for the third installment of this film series after such a long wait, or has the moment for this franchise passed? There’s potential that nostalgia could work in its favor, but it also risks failing to recapture the unique magic the original film achieved back in 2009.
